This is a stray cat that I've been feeding. She ended up having 4 black kittens. Before she had kittens she was completely black. After, the kittens are about 4 months now, she slowly developed this grey color on both of her sides. Is that normal?

She's only like 1 year and a half old maybe she has a type of coat that takes time to evelope like this? Because at first she was all black

Yes I supposed the spoiled kittens may be to blame! Lol jk. But she hasn't been fixed yet she is very trap shy for some reason but I have a friend who is currently helping us out with that.

It's odd tho because I have seen a lot of cats and never saw something like this!

I know there is a black smoke lineage in the area I thought maybe this was some type of strange black smoke effect or something like that

??

That's a good question. When I think about it, it may be a loss of fur actually... she doesn't let me touch her or get too close so it's hard to tell but it could be fur loss.

If that's the case what would cause this to happen? She behaves normally and eats well and plays alot

My cat looks similar to that because of excessive grooming. Is the hair shorter then the rest? It looks more like the under coat. It doesn't look normal. She may be stressed from the kittens. Does she lick more then normal that you have noticed? It could also be allergies, maybe try to feed a more chicken based food? It may because of a rubbing issue, its odd she doesn't have it along her back, just on the sides. I don't think it is super serious, (but I'm not a vet)  but if you can trap her to have her spayed, have the vet look at it and be aware that she may have some stress or allergy issues. All the luck!

^ Everything I was thinking. My 14 year old actually has this same issues going on. I've tried reducing stress for her and changed her food (again) and she seems to be getting "fur-fuller" again.

Mange (not as common in cats, but it happens) - caused by mites

Allergies

Ringworm

Overgrooming

Hormonal imbalances

Those are a few.  I agree it is hard to tell from those photos.  I'd be cautious about touching her but that doesn't seem to be an issue for you at this point in time.  It would be great if you could trap her and have her medically assessed. If not you, perhaps a local rescue might be able to assist.

Thanks for being there for her and her kittens!
