it's almost the new year, just several days until 2016! i was thinking yesterday about New Year's Eve, what i'll be doing.

so with New Year's Eve on my mind, for today's Question of the Day......................

What do you do on New Year's Eve?   (celebrate in some way; watch the New Year's Ball descend in Times Square, NYC, NY -- there in person or on tv; have a special meal on New Year's Eve; attend a celebration in your area or with family or friends; go to bed at your regular time, or other)

i'll start!

for the last couple of years, i've enjoyed watching videos of New Year's celebrations from around the world -- on youtube. i especially enjoy the videos which show celebrations starting in parts of the world which begin the new year first, and then show other parts of the world -- in chronological order. it's all so pretty to see!

this year i think i'll also be watching at least part of the webcast at the official times square website -- http://www.timessquarenyc.org/new-years-eve/index.aspx .

i'm not sure that i'll stay up through midnight, to 'see in' the new year, but it's possible!

i'd like to do some looking around online, to see if i can find some photos of New Year's Eve at Times Square through the years too. i've come across some already, which were really interesting!

Okay, now it's your turn!

I don't have cable so I won't be watching any of the shows. Most of them are lame anyway. I don't do much. Have a couple of beverages and snuggle with the furkids so nothing exciting.

Nothing special.  Staying in with son.  If he is up will take him outside as expect some fireworks to go off.  He seems to get a kick out of them.

It's just a normal day as far as I'm concerned. There are usually firework displays at some of the pubs, so I'll sometimes watch the 'free' displays from a window (this house is very conveniently placed when it comes to free fireworks watching :lol3: ). That's about it.

For the last few years, I've gone out to shows concerts, some that are at proper venues, and even one at a punk rock dive bar in the city a few years back. This year, my going-out buddy will be going up to WI with her family and staying overnight. I was invited but not quite up to staying away overnight anywhere lately.

So, I'm contemplating just staying in that night this year. I'm still not sure. I may go to a show at the aforementioned punk rock dive bar. I know a lot of the people that will be there, including some of the folks in the one band playing. My mom doesn't stay up till midnight, hasn't for many years, so it would be just me and the cats if I stay home, which isn't such a bad thing. I don't think I'll make up my mind until that evening though to be honest.

Not sure yet. We're low key about it. Dinner and a movie is good for us. I don't really get the fuss about New Year's. It always seems hokey to me, even when I was younger. Any day that forces me to go to bed hours past my sleep set point is tedious.

Usually stay in, stay up until midnight have some special yummy food, drinks and watch some specials on the tely with my momsey.

And then melt some metal over the fireplace, and toss it in a bucket of cold water
we each do that. The shape it turns out and deciphering it determines our future for the upcoming year. Finnish tradition that we do!

And also New Year's Day dinner.

Several years ago, Rick and I started staying in on New Year's Eve. I usually make a bunch of appetizers or the "Big Sandwich". Depending on the weather, I'll throw some Louisville Wings on the grill. And then we watch movies, either in bed or both of us flopped on the couch in the living room while we munch.

I put some folded money in an old pocketbook and put it outside on the front porch.

As the ball comes down at about the 10 second mark, Rick and I will kiss until the New Year comes in. And then I go outside bring my pocketbook back into the house.

That way, the first thing I do is kiss the person I love. The second thing I do is bring money into our house. Those traditions will hopefully stay with us throughout the New Year.

We usually go to bed around 2 or 3:00 in the morning on New Year's Day.

(The Big Sandwich is a homemade loaf of circular bread. I bake the bread early in the morning and let it out to cool. Cut in half horizontally, then it's spread with mayo and mustard, stacked with slices of lettuces, tomato, different deli meats and cheeses, then wrapped in foil, and warmed up in the oven, enough so the cheeses melt into each other. Unwrap, slice, and eat. Yum.)

I watch Dick Clark's Rockin New Year's Eve (I know he passed away but they keep the show going!) special and watch the ball drop on tv. I don't go out, too darn cold and crazy! I'd rather stay home curled up watching that show with my pets. :)

I love your tradition!

Usually I have a party I go to but this year am staying home with Chula and Paul. At midnight I'll have a glass of wine and listen to all the loons shooting off their guns outside.

very nice!

ahhh, i love how really young children/babies react to things. does your son laugh or make those squeals of excitement (that young children sometimes make) when he sees/hears fireworks? i remember the first time my nephew (at about one year old-ish) saw and was able to pet a cat. my SIL brought both my niece and nephew with us to my two cats annual physicals appointment. my little nephew let out a squeal of sheer joy and happiness when he pet the office cat there at the vet's.

i can understand that.
it's a pretty normal day here too, and then i watch the youtube videos of New Year's around the world in the evening/late night -- sometimes i'll watch more of them the next day too, to catch scenes from even more parts of the world.

it sounds like either way, whichever you decide to do, it'll be a good New Year's Eve for you!

that sounds like a lovely New Year's Eve!

i read an article today -- if i remember correctly, from the New York Times, that was saying that among other things something to the effect of New Year's Eve and all the 'carrying on' is an excuse for (some) people to let go and be a part of a mass of humanity in Times Square. i don't see the attraction in that, personally
-- but, to each his own...

I can count on one hand how many times I've gone 'out' on New Year's Eve. I don't drink, I am not a fan of crowds or loud music and I detest driving when there are lunatics and drunk drivers out in hoards! I am definitely staying home! Snuggling with my Boys on the couch, watching movies, reading my book, and snacking on some cheese, crackers and grapes. I will most likely be up at midnight... it's already 3:00 A.M. here now and I am wide-eyed and bushy-tailed! LOL  I've always been a night owl!

One thing I do every New Year's Eve is that I get out my checkbook and write the new year date on all my checks!  I started doing that a long time ago because I hate having to void a check and rewrite a new one because I wrote the previous year's date on it!

My New Year's Resolution has always been to not keep any. So far, that has worked out perfectly for me! LOL

When our son was dating a girl who lived in Manhattan, he went to visit her over New Year's. She stayed with us over Christmas, then he took her home. They spent New Year's Eve at Time Square. He said it was really interesting with all the people and he had a great time. But it was an experience that he wasn't sure he wanted to repeat. It was nice and he can say that he did it. But that's it.
