I got a new kitty about two months ago and she had a few accidents in the house and there was blood in her urine. Due to her being a kitten they didn't want to do a cysto and decided to treat with antibiotics, no luck. We finally got a cysto and it revealed lots of crystals and no infection. So we switched her to the royal canin urinary SO wet food in the morning and the SO dry food at night. The vet still wanted to incorporated some hard food in for her dental health. She has still had some accidents outside the litter box and I am thinking it's because she still has crystals. Does it take awhile for the food to work and for them to no longer form crystals? I want to do all I can for my little girl and want to make sure we are doing all we can. Any suggestions or anyone experience similar issues? Our vet said it was so unusual for a kitten to have this problem and I am hoping the food works. Her health appears wonderful otherwise and she's a sweet kitty that loves to play. Looking for advice however, thanks!

Crystals can cause cystitis and pain which in turn can cause a cat to avoid the litterbox. Sometimes bacteria cause an infection around the crystals but not always. It can be just crystals and that means antibiotics won't help.
Did the vet say how much crystal he found and of what type? If there's strong evidence of crystals it could mean there is too much of a particular mineral in the diet. The type of crystal would tell you which mineral is out of balance and that's what would need to be corrected via dietary changes.
Sometimes cystitis is caused by stress alone. There may be crystals in the urine but they're not actually the cause of bladder inflammation. That's called idiopathic cystitis and it flares up during times of stress because of the effect of stress hormones.
