So after a lot of trial and error, I have found some great foods that Ghibli really likes that I will buy off Chewy and have in my rotation along with some raw: all of them are carrageenan free and I want to keep it that way...... but also all of them are mostly pates! I want to add some variety. Any suggestions for some good non-pate foods that is also carageenan and grain free? I am even open to cheaper foods so long as they are carrageenan and grain free. ANY ideas welcome :)

So far I am ordering:

Wild Calling: rabbit, turkey

Hound and Gatos Beef

Sheba Pates: chicken, beef,

Merrick LID: chicken, turkey

Tiki Cat (occasional treat): sardines

I Love Weruva but I don't know if I can afford to feed the non fish flavors on a regular basis

Nutro natural choice Sliced turkey (basically turkey chunks in a gravy) I also feed the chicken and tuna once and awhile. But it has tuna (its like the 5th ingredients, i think) so may not be something you want to use. I'm okay with it, though.

Weruva double dip (mine go nuts for this one).

Tikicat, but mine haven't been feeling Tiki lately so it's out of my rotation.

The only other non-pates i have in my rotation are Soulisitc.

Nutro! Okay I forgot about that one. Have you ever tried Whole Earth Farms? I just discovered it online. Really decently priced with no carrageenan. It does have potatoes but I don't really mind that if it isn't excessive.

I haven't tried it, although i did look at it the other day but I decided against it because I wasn't sure about the peas or potatoes. My cats seem to be weird about veggies in their food.

I forgot to mention the new Bravo foods. I believe the fricassee variety is non-pate, but I haven't tried these foods yet because I'm hesitant to buy a whole case if my cats don't like them, they're a little pricey, too.

I just started my cats on Bravo's fricassee line, the turkey flavor. While the food is described as minced it's a bit chunkier than minced. It's carrageenan free, no gums other than agar agar.
Not sure how much you pay for Weruva, however, here in NYC I can get the 5.5 oz Bravo for $2.30 vs the $2.60 I was paying for a 6 oz of Weruva's Steak Frites.
There is also Lotus Just Juicy, turkey or pork, which are shredded. Again, not sure how the price compares to Weruva.

That's a pity that you can't get a single can to sample at a local retailer. ;(

Red barn tricky chicky stew, pride rockstar rabbit, Iams purrfect delicasies turkey & liver, tiki gourmet carnivore liver and chicken, Earthborn chicken jumble. Merrick Grammys pit pie or turducken. The rest are pates.

Yeah, I keep hoping someone local will carry it but so far no luck. My cats aren't super picky, but I'd hate to spend that much money on a case and have some of them turn their nose up at it.

Thanks for the suggestions! I was actually really thinking about trying Red Barn :)

I also have an sort of unrelated question for any of you who have fed commercial raw: I feed Ghibli mainly Rad Cat and Natures Variety Instinct Rabbit.... but I just tried a trial size of PRIMAL Turkey and it smelled terrible. I fed it to Ghibli and he seems fine. There were no punctures in the sealed plastic casing and it didn't look off in color. Is that normal for Primal turkey?

@missmimz  I know you have some experience with raw

Hmm, I don't feel Primal only RC and some raw I make. I have tried to feed Primal before, but my cats weren't really into it. From memory it didn't smell weird to me. I'm always weary of something that smells off. Although I think raw meat in general smells like metal and sometimes it'll make me gag.

I think all the Primal and Nature's Variety raw foods -- both freeze-dried and frozen -- smell a little odd. They don't usually have a strong smell but I wouldn't exactly call it pleasant! Our cats eat Primal twice a day so we definitely see some slight variations in their foods, both the appearance and the smell. That goes for lots of brands: the cats don't seem to like the Nutro Natural Choice we just got from Chewy quite as much as usual. They'll still happily eat it but they're a little slower (this is actually a plus because one cat is a scarfer and barfer
) and the food seems a little thicker, with slightly larger pieces; I wonder if it's from a different factory. For the record, they like the Nutro NC minced chicken, sliced turkey, and chunky chicken.

Since @missmimz mentioned Weruva's Double Dip: we feed our cats that one plus two other from the Cats in the Kitchen line, Fowl Ball and Chicken Frick a See. They love all of them and Cats in the Kitchen is one of Weruva's cheaper lines of food. (It also seems to have a lot more meat than the Truluxe foods, like Quick & Quirky, which the cats love but we only buy as an occasional treat because it's expensive and not especially meaty! But they do love it!)

That's going to be a tough one b/c what smells odd to one person may be entirely normal to another. I have used Primal raw in the past, both the frozen raw and the FD.  I have noticed the FD has a strong smell but I wouldn't call it terrible. The frozen tends to have a strong odor also but to my nose, not terrible or putrid.

I am guessing that if the food were off somehow, your kitty wouldn't eat it, that has been my experience with e.g., the FD Pure Bites, lately the bags I get just smell plain rancid and the cats won't touch it. Don't know my dear .... just use your best judgement on this one. :(

Pride by Instinct rabbit, chicken, duck and lamb. They come in flaked and minced varieties http://www.instinctpetfood.com/pride-instinct-grain-free-canned-cat-food

Soulistic Good Karma and Harvest Sunrise  http://soulisticpet.com/orginal-flavors/orginal-flavor-cans/

Red Barn Chicken Stew  http://www.redbarninc.com/grain-free-cat-products/chicken-stew-5-5oz

Nutro Natural Choice Sliced turkey and minced chicken  http://www.nutro.com/natural-cat-food/nutro/canned.aspx

I serve my cats very little fish so I didn't include those. They eat fish once or twice a month at most. Usually from the Soulistic line.
