A friend and I want to get an apartment together. The problem is that we would have four animals total, and it is difficult finding an apartment willing to allow two animals, let alone four. Obviously neither one of us is willing to leave one of our babies behind. The total would be two dogs and two cats. Do any of you have any tips? The place we have our eye on days that it allows animals but there are no quantity specifications. We are hoping that we can offer a larger deposit or pay an extra fee. Neither one of my cats weigh more than 10 pounds, Cricket weighs 12 and Precious probably clocks in around 20, so net weight would be around 50. I would also be willing to cap the cats claws if the landlord expresses concern about scratching, but I draw the line at declawing. We were also thinking, if we hypothetically get the place, it would be best to settle the cats first then bring the dogs in together. The dogs we will introduce to each other ahead of time. (I know, I'm the one making life difficult with the animals!!) Had anyone ever been in a similar situation? Any advice?

Privately owned small-scale places are better---the big places are run by management companies that can't bend the rules for anyone. But if you find someone who manages their own properties, they can make an exception for you if they like you. Get renters insurance (the kind that covers damage to the property) and make up little bios for your pets that the landlord can look at, and be willing to make a decent deposit.

A trailer might work, too, if you're willing. A lot of trailer landlords will allow pets.

I'm not sure where you live, but if you can't find an apartment... is renting a townhouse an option?

I rented a townhouse in college and we had 4 animals in it. The dogs got along swimmingly... the cats, not so much. To be fair, we didn't really do the slow introduction, I just kept my cat separated from the other animals. It was just easier.

There are other pet lovers out there that rent out apartments in, say, two flats out there. It's a matter of finding them. Are there any specific websites out there that cater to people looking for apartments that accept multiple pets? If not, there should be, hmmm...

I rent in a fairly small apartment building...74 units..

We are only allowed 2 cats..no dogs...

There is also a large security payment additionally to the actual security payment (1 months rent---yup an entire month extra for a cat) in addition to I think 50 bucks a month added on...

It is a rip off...

There are so many cats in this building..I do not see how they can all afford to pay these outrageous fees.
