Hi,

So my dad decided to get a kitten two weeks ago from an ad on Facebook. The previous owner said she was 8 weeks old. She was infested with fleas so we took her to a groomer and then a few days later she went to the vet for her first vaccines. She had been constipated the couple days before we took her but the vet said she looked fine and the dewormer might help with that. She was 1.2bs and she feels like skin and bones minus the slightly round tummy, but the vet didn’t comment on that minus saying she probably had worms.

Since the vet visit she’s been having very soft yellowish greenish stool which she runs all down her butt, legs, and tail. I hadn’t realized that that she’s supposed to have more solid poops until recently. She’s been very very lethargic lately and is constantly crying and today she developed a leaky right eye. It also sounds like she’s breathing too heavily to me.

She eats fine. She doesn’t drink from her bowl but we’ve been adding water to her wet food. I read today that boiled ground beef can help with diarrhea (I know that she needs more than just that in her diet). We’ve had to wash her butt twice a day for the past several days (warm water and baby soap if it’s really bad on her legs and tail). It’s pretty cold in the house and there are no other cats at my dad’s but he has an old dog who likes to lick her who had been living outside until recently.

I’d really appreciate some advice. How serious does this sound? She has another appointment coming up soon, but will she be okay to wait that long? Does it sound like she needs an emergency appointment? My dad has her in a box with rags down and was blow drying her. Is there anything more we can do at home?

I think she does need to go to the vet ASAP. She's small for her age and sounds like she has a whole bunch of things going on, including parasites.

She was already given dewormer by the vet though. Could she still have them anyway? And she was 1.2lbs almost two weeks ago at almost 9 weeks. I don't know how much she weighs now but the vet didn't seemed to concerned with her weight at the time. Does she sound emergency vet sick? Or is this something that can be held off until I schedule an appointment tomorrow? Is there anything else I can do for her until then? I am worried about her and if push comes to shove we'll pay the fees for the emergency vet clinic (which is a $90 entrance fee!) but she is  eating and she appears to be hydrated normally (we tent tested). So is she okay enough to wait for an appointment?

I second what @talkingpeanut said about going to the emergency vet. I know it's expensive, but kittens are expensive! I adopted two 8-week-old kittens in July via a friend of a friend on FB. They were found in the mulch where the lady worked. But they still had all the problems a lot of outdoor kittens have - worms, etc. Oliver had an infection in his eye that he caught from his mama.

It's not normal for a kitten to be going in such a way that it needs to be bathed twice a day. I never had to do that with my kittens, but I would have taken them in immediately if they had that kind of problem. So I strongly suggest you do as well. Not trying to be mean, but want to make sure the baby is ok.

Dewormer needs to be given two or three times a few weeks apart to get the worms at all stages of their life cycle. She sounds like she has coccidia though, which is a different kind of parasite. I would ask the vet if the dog can get this as he's been licking her. I don't know.

She is quite small as she should be around two pounds. Do you feel she has gained or lost weight since you've had her?

Honestly, I don't know about taking her in. She is probably in a considerable amount of discomfort and I would want to alleviate that immediately. If she's still eating she probably won't die over night. I think she needs to go tomorrow at the latest though. At her size and age this is somewhat urgent.

I agree with @talkingpeanut.  She should be seen at the very latest tomorrow since she's so small and so young.  When is her upcoming appointment?

Donutte, I know cats are expensive. This is my dad's kitten who he just decided to get one day without thinking it through -.- I have a 5 year old cat but I've never had a kitten so when she started getting poop all over her butt I went online and read that kittens sometimes have issues with cleaning their own butts. I didn't realize that loose stool was a problem until I read that online in a different article yesterday.
It seems stupid in retrospect but I thought it was normal since she was a kitten... yeah. Talking peanut I had no idea about the dewormer. The vet didn't say anything but they did give us a free sample of kitten Revolution which is supposed to take care of worms too.I don't think she's lost any weight and I want to say she looks bigger but I've been around so much it's hard to tell.Ginny her next appointment is Friday. I can call the vet first thing tomorrow though to see if they'll get her in that day.

She definitely cannot wait until Friday. If she can get in to the regular vet tomorrow that should be ok, but if not she should go to the emergency vet tomorrow.

Look up coccidia. The poop has a particular smell and color. Revolution won't treat it. Diarrhea is never normal.

It could be giardia, either way the  sooner you get he looked at the better it will be. These things if not treated, can lead to a bad result

Sorry that came out oddly. I'm on my mobile. What I meant to say is I can update tomorrow with the vets answers. Hopefully it isn't anything serious.

BTW you are doing a good job looking after her, we are  just worried because the little ones are so fragile. Keep note of everything the vet says, then report back. You have an army of cat lovers here on your side that will do their very best to help you and kitty out. Does she have a name yet?

Some ideas - Continue giving her fluids. Don't allow her eye to get crusted shut. You can clean it with a warm, damp cloth. If she seems congested you can hold her in a steamed bathroom. And definitely don't let her get chilled.

Good luck! Please update.

Maybe try giving her some chicken broth as well as water.  There's one on the market that has only 5 ingredients.  My Gracie drank it and loved it!  You are doing a good job caring for the little kitty.  It's obvious both you and your dad love her.  I hope the vet has some positive news for you tomorrow!

But remember that it can't have garlic or onions! They are toxic to cats.
