So my cat has a sore on his gums and I did some research and found this product biotene for cats people seemed to like. Problem is apparently the company GSK that used to produce it stopped producing it for cats and only makes it for humans. Another company Pet King is making it now but changed the name to Oratene. It has aloe vera which apparently the other didn't - they claim they some how "took the toxic part out" but I'm dubious. How do you extract the poison and still get any benefit - I'm thinking it is another scam like throwing cranberries in food even though the benzoic acid in cranberries is toxic to cats and otherwise has no nutritional value for them.

Other ingredients - polyglycitol, glyceryl, polymehtacylate, sorbitol, hydroxyethyl cellulose, dextrose, potassium iodide, natural enzymes - lactoperoxidase - lysozyme, lactoferrin, glucose oxidase

Apparently when they first started making it the aloe vera was the first ingredient and I read where cats vomitted & now it is somewhere in the middle. Seems to me they don't know what they're doing.

I'm wondering if anyone uses this new stuff and what they think of it - or are you still just using the human form of the biotene?

The toxic part of aloe is the layer right at the surface, the part that's green and has a white latexy sap. The clear middle gel is fine for cats, and can even be given to cats for gut issues. The reason aloe's on a lot of toxic plants lists is because the way cat's are normally exposed to aloe is a houseplant, if they bite into a whole leaf they get the latex and it irritates their stomach.

No idea how that company processes their aloe, or if the other ingredients might be a problem.

Ok thanks. I wrote the company asking them why they put it in and how they ensure the toxic part doesn't get mixed in and why they changed the formula moving it from the first ingredient to mid way (read that a lot of cats were vomitting) and got no response also asked about the sugar and sodium amounts in a 1/8th teastpoon since a lot of cats with mouth issues are also diabetic/kidney cats but no response.

Yeah, some of the ingredients really don't sound great for cats. And sugar in a dental product.... hmph. Cats don't even perceive sweet like most mammals, so there's no flavor benefit from it. And if the sorbitol's just for moisture, why not glycerin?

Yeh sugar causes bacteria - bacteria eats sugar and thrives on it - seems like this treatment actually perpetuates the problem making it worse and causing you to buy more and more of the stuff. I wish I could find a decent product with just the enzymes - if anyone knows of a holistic product like that please let me know.

My vet recommended a water additive, Biotene or Oratene for my cat's dental issues. I found Zymox Oratene on Chewy.com. It says it's for dry mouth. There is no aloe listed in the ingredients. It claims to be an enzyme system. Apparently there are different brands or companies making this Oratene product. That's confusing....now I'm wondering if I bought the right stuff.
