Last night while Dear Richard was bowling, I ripped through the house...vacuumed, dusted, wiped down the bathroom, washed a load of kitty/dog blankets, etc. And decided to clean the top oven to the stove. Piece of cake, hit the self-cleaning button, set it for 3 hours, and life goes on. Until it finished cleaning and got caught in the Locked/Unlocked cycle. I can't get it out of the Locked cycle. The door opens, but it still says "Locked" and I can hear it cycling. This is not good. I can't use the oven. It won't clear. I even turned the circuit breaker off and back on, thinking that might clear it out. Didn't work. Turned the circuit breaker off and kept it off all night.

This morning, while Rick was in the basement sorting recyclables, he called up to ask if I wanted him to reset the circuit breaker. Yes, please. And the darn oven is still cycling Locked/Unlocked and I still can't use it.

I'll have to Google for GE Profile ovens to see if there's any kind of master switch or combination of buttons to push to get it clear off completely. If that doesn't work, I'll have to call the repair-weenie to come in. And since the whole system is caught in that cycle, I can't even use the bottom oven.  I can't even use the stove burners until we get the whole cycle cleared.

And Christmas is.....one week away. Lovely. Just lovely.

Well, there's the grill outside; I suppose we can work on that if we have to. Change the menu around for a picnic-type dinner. If push comes to shove, I can take everything to my MIL's kitchen, cook it there, then bring it home. Oy

Winchester Winchester Oh no. I hope you can get it working. I have a GE Profile which is getting old now. We built the house in 2002 and I am still using the stove I bought then. I have never had this problem. Have you tried unplugging the stove and leave it like that five minutes or so, then plug it back in.

I wish I lived close by. You could cook in my kitchen any day of the week. :yummy:

Thanks guys. I'm hoping I can figure something out, at least to get the stove/oven to work over the holidays. There has to be something, a code, a series of buttons to push to reset the stove. Something!

Misterwhiskers, we had had the circuit switch off all night. Rick turned it on this morning and the stove immediately went back into the Locked/Unlocked cycle. It's all automatic, so there's no locking latch. As soon as I hit the self-clean button, it automatically latches on its own.

Barbara, see above; we already turned the circuit breaker off, so that didn't help. You have no idea how many times I wished I lived closer to you. I think we'd have a great time in the kitchen!

I'm going to call the service-weenie and see if he can help me. The problem is that I'm not at home, so whatever he tells me I can try when I do get home, but if it doesn't work, I'm done until I can call him back and set up an appt. I still say there's something I'm not figuring out!

ETA: So far, I've read to hit the Light Switch and the Cancel button at the same time. Also read to hit the Clock and Cancel button at the same time. Things to try!!

Winchester Winchester Pam, I did read that Rick reset the circuit breaker thing. But I would still try the unplug thingy too. I would try anything. I hope you get it straight.

I sure hope your oven will be working shortly whether you figure it out or the repair comes in, you're lost without that oven/stove, good luck.

Best of luck with your oven woes!  Sometimes I am reminded that there are actually advantages to living in an apartment complex with very basic appliances!

The only way to unplug the stove is to (somehow) get it out from the wall and that is not easy. It's a very snug fit in there between the countertops and it took everything we had to get the stove back into place when we put the new floor down.

I did call the store where we bought the stove. Talked to the receptionist; she said she'd have the guy call me back, but he hasn't called me yet. We bought the stove locally (not from a big box retailer), so I'm hoping they will come in to service what they sell (that's their big ad thing: We always service what we sell). The problem is that this stove is considered "old" now.

When we got home last night, we tried all kinds of combinations: CLOCK then CANCEL, LIGHT then CANCEL. CLOCK then LIGHT. All kinds of stuff. All kinds of button combinations. Nothing worked. Still says LOCKED although the door will open. Rick went back downstairs and turned the circuit back off. I can't get anything to work until I get the cycle reset.

I'm going to try a one-hour self cleaning cycle this morning and see if that will reset things.

Winchester Winchester I understand not unplugging in your situation. I was going to suggest the one hour cleaning cycle. I googled and came up with that. Let's hope the local folks will know what to do. Call and make a pain of yourself until somebody calls you back. :lol3:

AND...........I have my oven back! Amazing what slamming the oven door in frustration will do!

I turned the breaker on and came back upstairs. And it was doing the same old LOCKED thing. I started hitting all button combinations I could think of. Door was locked and I couldn't open it. I tried to do a one-hour self-cleaning. That didn't work. So I hit CANCEL and the door unlocked, but it still said LOCKED and I could hear it cycling. Opened the door, cleaned out the white ash (there wasn't a lot as the oven wasn't in that bad a shape). Shut the door and started pressing button combinations again. I tried to turn the oven on and got DOOR.

And by that time, I had had it.  I opened the oven door and slammed it shut. Called it all kinds of names, cussed a blue streak at it, and told it that it was going to the junk yard. "I swear by all that's holy you will NOT do this to me! Not at Christmas! I forbid it!"
Opened the door again and I really slammed it. The oven cowered in fear, the LOCKED light went off. And the oven works.

And life is good in Pam's kitchen again.

(And I'm never cleaning the oven again. Ever.)

i absolutely love your approach! seriously! those two slams of your oven door, between them somehow fixed whatever was 'stuck' with the LOCKED problem.

LOL, all you had to do was slam the door and wala, it worked.  A little cussing helping too, glad you have your stove/oven back...Merry Christmas and happy baking.

There is no problem so large that cussing and slamming things does not make better...if only to let you vent.  And in this case, it was just the ticket.  I'm a huge fan of cussing and slamming things when appropriate (and occasionally when not so appropriate)
