Hello,

My younger cat, (1 year 9 months) is having skin and weight loss problems. Actually, its not that she is loosing weight, she doesnt seem to gain any.  She is not fixed yet. We live on a boat in the Cartribbean. We came to Cartagena and took her to the vet. They did all kinds of tests, gave us antibioticas and a spray. We just finished the 10 days of antibiotics. I do not think diagnosisi was correct. Nothing has changed. She has good appetite. She eats a lot and does not gain a single gram. Hair loss  is wherever she can lick. The hair on her head, neck, back, anywhere her tongue doesn´t reach is unaffectec. Lots of hair in those areas. It starts like she is grooming. By licking, she takes the hair off, than licks the skin, causing it to turn into a wound. I feel like there is something in her system or saliva and that the medicine was not the correct one at all. She has always been skinny. But she eats, she is always hungry actually. She plays, active. She actually plays too much maybe. She plays fetch like  dog. ALl day she insists you throw her rope, she brings it back over and over again. But, she is so skinny. As soon she gains weight we will have her fixed. But we are having hard time figuring out the problem. Another captain has had problems with the vets here with her cat.  I was hoping I could get some help online maybe.,

Any guesses what it might be. I appreciate any help, ideas you may have. Thank you in advance

was she de-wormed? worms can cause cats to eat a lot and not gain weight

It's been awhile but I was wondering how your kitty is? I just saw this thread and wondered if maybe she is allergic to something in her food. You could try keeping a food diary just to check it out.

Also have you considered getting a second opinion from another vet?

Living on a boat sounds pretty wonderful!

Did they do any blood work on her? She seems kinda young for hyperthyroidism but it would be best to still rule it out. Hyper-t can cause a kitty to basically starve because their metabolism is so high, that no matter how much they eat it's not enough. Can also have to do with hair thinning, but it sounds like that may be more related to grooming in her case.

Not saying that's what your kitty has, but it is worth getting it checked out.
