Hello all,

My cat Serj, 11lbs 11 years old in Feb had surgery yesterday to remove a tumor in his upper right mammory gland. They removed that one gland (not the whole set not sure if that is the correct verbiage). They feel they got everything and there were no blood vessels attached. It is being sent in to find out if it is cancerous (which would be super rare in a male cat). Needless to say we also found a seperate cyst in his abdominal cavity via xray, but they did not search for it while in surgery bc she felt they were not related and she didn't want to go digging until we get the results back of this tumor and we watch the one attached to his bowel. I also found out he has very bad arthritis in his lower back (at his bum area).

Last night/today he is acting like a kitten. Running around crazy jumping (which he has stopped jumping a lot since his arthritis has gotten worse, looking back it all makes sense, just thought he was getting old and lazy).

I asked the vet and they said they gave him a shot of pain meds that would last for 3 days, so I am thinking he just feels great and pain free for the first time in who knows how long (I am looking into laser therapy for his arthritis). They said I need to keep him contained as much as possible so he doesn't mess up his stitches and whatnot.

Anyways, I looked online and was only seeing where animals get hyper after being fixed.... but nothing about after this kind of surgery, so thought I would reach out and see if anyone else had a similar situation.

Friday the meds would wear off so I am taking him out of town with me. I am worried with him moving around so much, once the meds wear off he will be in more pain bc of all this moving.

Anyways, thanks so much for reading, please share stories/give advice on what I should do.

...with the cats...
@kittiekitten -- i don't have experience with cats reactions to anesthesia, but i'm sure others who have experience in this area will be along shortly.

how is your Serj doing today? has he settled down? when will you get the results of the tumor's testing?

Thank you for the reply, sorey it has taken me a few to get back to you!
Serj did well. We went out of town and I think he enjoyed being the only cat (he is the dominant of my 5 cats). He continued to jump in windows and lay in the middle of the floor comfy sleeping and played even after the meds wore off. Once we for home he has been a bit more reserved.
I got the results back. It is Grade II Mammary Adenocarcinom. We will be going in on my birthday to see if an ultrasound shows any tumors in other organs. The xray just showed the one on his intestine the vet things is a calcified lymph node.
If the ultrasound goes well, we will be doing 2 surgeries, one chain at a time.
I have been reading about this cancer and feel lost. I'm holding out hope I got his earlier then most and if it hasn't spread maybe we will have more then the mean of 3 years.
My heart is broken.

I'm so sorry you got such terrible news. Fingers crossed that the ultrasound results are as good as possible. Will Serj be getting chemotherapy as well? Poor boy. I hope he is feeling okay. [emoji]128149[/emoji]

My vet said there are mixed results if it is beneficial to do chemo or not. She said she can refer me to an oncologist if I'd like. I'm really torn on chemo, as I know it is hard to deal w. He is older and wouldn't understand why it is happening, why he is in pain. It won't prevent it from coming back... Any thoughts?

I'm more on the side of no as I have only seen one report talking how chemo was beneficial for this, as far as a disease free period. I am not convinced it is worth it.

When my Milo was diagnosed with cancer, chemotherapy wouldn't have helped so I've never had to make this decision. I've read that cats tolerate chemo pretty well but just don't have the experience. Hopefully someone who does can chime in.

How is Serj today?
