I have 2 kittens in the basement in separate pet carriers, recovering from neutering.  Is it a good idea to take the kittens in the carriers outside to see their mom cat?  Will it do them good to have a little visit?

We have yet to catch the mom cat for spaying.

Oh.... well I went ahead and did it anyway.  I had brought the first kitten out to see mom cat a few days ago.  And mom cat sniffed the carrier, but didn't seem that interested.  That cat and kitten weren't that close.

But this time, I brought out the 2nd kitten.  He and the mom cat were inseparable before.  And this time the mom cat sniffed the cage a lot, as if trying to find a way to break the kitten out.

This makes me feel like we REALLY have to catch mom cat and spay her, so that those two can reunite.

Once the kittens are weaned mother cats tend to lose interest in them, especially if they go through another heat cycle. Some mothers and adult kittens stay friends for life, but not always. How old are the kittens?

You can use kittens as bait to trap the mother with. Keep the kitten in the carrier, place the carrier outside the trap, with the door right up against the back of the trap so that the mother cat will have to go in to get close to her kitten. Cover the carrier with a blanket or something to prevent the mother being able to see the kitten through the sides and back. Once the mother enters the trap she will trigger it and you can get her to the vet too.

Thank you for having this little family fixed, you're making their lives a lot easier.

Hi Norachan - The kittens are 4.5 months old.

That is an interesting idea of putting the kitten at the other end of the trap as bait.  Have you done that technique yourself?

You can give it a try, although at the age of 4 months the mother probably doesn´t have too much interest in them any more. I trapped a feral with very young kittens, barely a week old. Placed them in a bed of straw in the trap - a few hours later I found momma nursing happily in the trap. This only works when the kittens are young enough not to walk away... in this case one would have to confine them to a carrier or other trap placed next to the "trap trap".

Btw, the photo was taken with the highest zoom peeking around the corner. Once she noticed me, she was not calm any more - a real feral. And still we fostered her and the kittens turned out wonderful pets, while she was spayed and returned to her farm after 8 weeks.
