I am travelling by motorhome from California to Colorado as well as Baja, Mexico. My vet says that I should find out if heartworm is prevalent in the areas that I'm in before she will test my cat and give her heartworm medication. Can you tell me where I can find the areas of high incidence in heartworm? Would it just be better to be safe and start treatment anyway?

Heartworm is actually everywhere, its just the amount of cases coming up positive every year. If your baby is going to be outdoors or near places she could get bit by a mosquito I would just put her on the medication. You can either go with heartguard or Revolution. Heartguard is just heartworm and the revolution does fleas, ticks, ear mites, roundworms and heartworms.

There is also the vaccine for heartworms in cats now...

I agree that if the cat will be allowed outside then by all means put it on the preventative. The Vet will usually test first to make sure your pet does NOT have heartworms before beginning the treatment. Have a great trip.
