Is it true that NVI canned dog food is the exact same formula as the cat food? I saw an Amazon review on it that said it was, but that was 4 years old. Is the formula still the same?

Yup, all Instinct dog / cat canned foods are the exact same ingredients, from first to last. Same also with the raw boost mixers. Instinct's raw formulas also used to be for both dogs and cats until about two years ago or so, they were split b/t cat / dog.

The Instinct canned foods are AAFCO approved to meet the minimum vitamin / mineral requirements for both cats and dogs.

Natures Logic canned foods also has the same formulas for both dogs / cats.

The company probably should label them as being for both cats and dogs. They'd get even more business!

I really get nervous at the idea of feeding dog food, so it's good to know that it's the same. Thanks for confirming that.

I can save an arm and leg by buying the dog food in the big cans instead of the little cans of cat food.

Some people with multi-cat households find that attractive since they can buy the 13 oz cans which are harder to find overall for cat food.

If someone had an issue with the ingredients being the same for both, it would be something to discuss with AAFCO (state division) versus NV since the former approved the same for both.

Ooh, they have the NVI lamb formula in big dog cans too. Much cheaper than the NVI cat cans.

Unlike NVI, not all brands have the same ingredients for both dogs and cats, so I would just read the ingredients labels to be sure.

Sometimes the ingredients may be the exactly the same but the amount of nutrients may be different. Dog food doesn't always have taurine and if it does, the amount is usually less than the AAFCO minimum taurine requirement for cats.

So is NVI dog food still okay? Were you referring to other foods?

I was referring to other foods. I fixed my post to quote PushPurrCatPaws comment about other brands. NV canned dog food can be fed to cats.

Okay, thanks for the clarification! So every single type of canned NVI dog food is fine for cats? Including venison, lamb, rabbit, etc?

Yup, NV Instinct  canned is the same for cats / dogs. If you need to confirm, just go to Instinct's site and open up multiple tabs and compare the two. :)

Awesome! I'm going to start purchasing the large cans of NVI. I feed 2 permanent residents and a foster cat an all wet diet and can use the cost savings.

My understanding as well is the cans are the same formula for cats and dogs. I seem to remember a NV rep confirming so on a product review on Petco.com The raw formulas are very similar except the cat ones include added taurine.

Nature's Logic also uses the same formula for cats / dogs.
