The case of the Phantom C****er

My kitty, bless his little heart, has an issue with defacation site selection. That is he poops inappropriately. But not just outside the litter box. There are two places in the house he will poop: in a litter box (wherever it may be), and in my roomate's room. Denied access to Josh's (my roomate) room he will use the litterbox exclusively. Needless to say neither my roomate, nor I, appreciate this. Kjartan (the kitten) doesn't hate Josh, in fact he thinks he is the shiznatz, and Josh likes him back, but given the opportunity... he will poop in his room. Can somebody help us? What things would make a cat do this?
