Hi all. My cat is 4 yes old. I've never encountered worms before so pretty grossed out at the moment! Anyway, Jerry was treated with Stronghold last Friday eve, and since Sunday morning I've noticed little white wriggly worms dropping out of his bum! Only one every so often but I'm concerned as it's been over a week! How long does/can it take? He's still eating and drinking though not half as much as he was which I put down to him having worms. Advice pls.,

That sounds like a pretty bad infestation. I think Stronghold is used to treat fleas and round worms but it's not effective against other kinds of worms. If they are still alive when they're coming out of him it doesn't sound like it's working.

Has he been to the vet? They can do a stool sample to find exactly what type of worms he has and treat them appropriately. Let them know that you've already used one kind of wormer and when you used it so they don't overdose him.

Generally speaking it's safer to get a wormer from your vet rather than over the counter. The ones you buy at pet stores aren't as effective and can cause allergic reactions.

Is Jerry an only pet? Worms can be picked up by other cats sharing the same litter box so watch out for this.

Hi I got the stronghold from the vets as it treats worms and fleas and is much stronger than over the counter treatments. I also have a dog who was treated at the same time but he has no worms. We don't have a litter tray for Jerry as he prefers to be outdoors. They both had their boosters together at same time as well.

Do you have the cat and the dog on regular flea treatments?  I'm wondering if he's reinfesting himself.

One treatment won't work to remove all of the worms. Some adults may be killed but others remain and will continue to reproduce and those eggs will hatch and eventually develop into adult worms. Several treatments are needed to fully stop the worm life cycle (adults, eggs, larvae). Follow the instructions the vet gave you. The treatments are usually spaced X amount of time apart to ensure that the worms and eggs are killed.

Did the vet determine what kind of worm your cat has? A general broad spectrum dewormer may not be as effective as a dewormer that targets one particular type of worm.
