Bud is not eating his wet food

This has happened over the past few days. I had been feeding him Sheba pate for a while, and rotated in another brand with some other flavors to cleanse his palate and jump-start his appetite again after he seemed to be getting sick of the same three or four Sheba flavors. Last week, he responded well to the new food, and pretty much cleaned his bowl the first two or three times. Then he slowed down again, and yesterday he didn't eat any of his wet food in the morning, and barely picked at it for his second meal.

Just now, I went back to the Sheba to see if he'd eat that again, and he was rubbing up against me while I was getting his food ready in the kitchen, like he usually does, but when I put the bowl with the fresh wet food down, and fresh water, he didn't eat.

My feeding schedule is like so:

- Wet food for breakfast.

- Wet food for lunch

- Dry food for late meal/overnight snacking

I have two separate bowls for wet and dry, and the reason I give him dry at night/overnight is because it seems to work for both of us. He has something to eat if he gets hungry overnight, and I can sleep mostly uninterrupted, or at least he's not waking me up for food. What I don't understand is why he turns his nose up at wet food sometimes. I clean his bowls regularly and thoroughly, I make sure they're thoroughly washed so there's not even a hint of dish soap or residue (knowing that he can smell much better than I can), and I don't give him that much dry food for night/overnight precisely because I want him to eat wet food most of the time, at consistent feeding times.

So this isn't so much a case of him not eating, it's just that he has these weird stretches where he eats very little wet food for a day or two at a time. I don't understand it.

Has anyone encountered this sort of behavior before? Any idea what the problem may be?

If it helps, his diet usually consists of wet chicken, turkey, beef, and occasionally salmon. He's not big on fish and won't eat tuna at all, but he will eat salmon occasionally, so I like to give it to him maybe once a week to vary the flavors a bit. Also, I play with Bud every night for at least a half hour using the wand toy for interactive play, and we play spontaneously at other times, while he has several balls, a track toy, a Kong Kickaroo that he really likes, and several other toys. In other words, he gets a good amount of play, and he's still very enthusiastic about playing. He's about four months shy of his 2nd birthday.

How many calories is he getting daily? And what's the breakdown of calories from (1) wet food, and (2) dry food? Does he eat all of the dry food at night?

@Plan --  is your guy eating the dry food you leave out some of at night? and his water drinking, and litter box output (pee and poop) seems normal (amounts) too? i'm asking because it sounds like your bud might be wanting more variety in his wet food, but i also don't want to assume there isn't something that potentially a vet should check on.

i'm very familiar with a cat wanting/needing more variety in their wet food. i think of it like if it were me -- would i want to eat the same food, or even 2 or 3 foods, every single day? i'm a big believer in variety in brands, flavors, and types of protein. i feel that that kind of variety helps to make sure our jaspurr gets all the nutrition he needs between the different brands/flavors/proteins. but also, he really never gets bored with his wet food.

you might want to try some new brands/flavors, based on your bud's likes/dislikes, and just hold off on the sheba for a while. in maybe a month or two you may very well be able to offer him the sheba again and have him eat it enthusiastically. however, your boy may continue wanting/needing variety in his wet food.

Thanks for the input, Push and mick.

I don't know what the calorie count is. Bud almost never finishes his wet food, and I'd say he eats 1/3 of a small can for his first meal, another 1/3 for his second meal, and at night I put down a little more than a handful of dry food. He's a small cat. Not sure what his weight is, but he's definitely in the healthy range judging by his body type.

I will try to mix his meals up more.

His litterbox output is fairly consistent, so I guess I shouldn't be worried. It was just the lack of interest in wet food, and a spell of lethargy that made me concerned. Maybe he has a cold, because I did hear him sneeze the other day.

i'd keep an eye out for any further lethargy as well as any more sneezing, along with continued even slight lack of interest (in wet/dry food) or loss of appetite. cats can get colds, upper respiratory infections -- as i'm sure you already knew. it's just that our human cold symptoms can be different from what cats experience when they have or are developing an URI. it can be easy to miss or not recognize the early symptoms.

Yeah exactly, that has crossed my mind and I'm worried about that. Well, yesterday he ate, today he didn't, but he did play today. In fact, he came up to me with his wand toy and started the play session, so that was a good sign.

It is tough without a benchmark though. I don't think he's ever been sick before, at least not that I've known. Thanks for your input, I appreciate it.

Maybe you can "spice" up his meals with some toppers like crumbled freeze-dried treats?

that's a very good idea!

just as you suggest -- i use freeze dried chicken and salmon treats, crumbled, as a topper for my jaspurr's wet food. there are days that he doesn't particularly care for a brand/flavor of canned food i'm serving him, but once i sprinkle the topper over it my jaspurr happily cleans his dish. i also use crumbled natures variety instinct raw boost mini's treats as a topper. i alternate between the two, so there's some variety.

Hey guys -- Merry Christmas and happy holidays!

Bud is doing well. I haven't heard him sneeze in a few days, and his appetite has returned. He also socialized when we had five people over on Tuesday night, making the rounds to get attention and petting. Right now he's watching my brother and SiL fall asleep in the next room lol.

The toppers idea is great, thanks. When you guys say freeze-dried treats, are you talking about specific toppers for cats? I've seen toppers in the grocery store, but I've never bought them. Or can I get away with crumbling something like those Blue moist treats and sprinkle them on? Do you mix them up in the wet food as well or just sprinkle them on top?

Here's the little guy in a photo taken by my SiL about an hour ago:

Merry Christmas to you and your Bud too!

i'm so glad that your boy's appetite has picked up again, and that he's stopped sneezing. he sounds like he's feeling well!

the toppers i use are life essentials freeze dried chicken treats (http://www.calvetsupply.com/product/Life-Essentials-Freeze-Dried-Chicken/Cat-Treats-and-Grass) and natures variety instinct raw boost minis (http://www.chewy.com/cat/natures-variety-instinct-raw-boost/dp/42388) -- i crumble both of those kinds for use as toppers, but they're also great for treats. there are really no 'rules' for toppers other than that your cat likes them -- and, for me, that they're reasonably healthy for kitty to be eating. crumbling the Blue moist treats would be fine as a topper, as long as your Bud likes them. if the Blue treats come in different flavors that your boy likes, you might consider alternating between the flavors...for variety and so he doesn't lose interest in that flavor of topper.

i sprinkle toppers just over the top of the wet food. the goal is to get a reaction like your boy being enthusiastic to eat his meal. you want him to smell the topper really easily.

awww.........so cute, under the Christmas tree!

Thanks again @mickNsnicks2mom !

I picked up some toppers at PetCo earlier today, and bought a few different brands and flavors of food to mix up his palate. And yes, he LOVES those Blue moist treats :)  I will report back here and let you guys know how it goes with the toppers.

Great success!

I am happy to report that Bud cleaned his plate yesterday when I fed him canned food with Blue Buffalo toppers. Thanks again for the help, you guys are the best.
