Hi All,

Thanks again for everyone's feedback on Tootsie's predicament from my last post. As mentioned before, I had her put to sleep after she was diagnosed (and in pain and discomfort) with FIP and feline leukemia. Now I have another question- I have another cat (named Donny Draper) who was with Tootsie for 3 months and I am afraid he has contracted these diseases. By the way, both have/had received all of their vaccinations (not that it helped Tootsie since I she had the diseases before being vaccinated). Should I have my surviving cat tested for Feline infectious peritonitis,  feline leukemia, and feline immunodeficiency virus (or their antibodies)? I would think this would be a no-brainer, but just want to confirm? Anything else I should test for? I inherited both cats and do not know their history. I'd like to adopt another cat but I don't want to put the new cat at risk if Donny Draper has contracted these diseases.

Many thanks for additional guidance on this! This site rocks!

Go ahead and test for FeLV and FIV. I don't think they're particularly expensive to test for and it's usually pretty quick. The results could be helpful in the future, especially regarding vet care. There's no test (that I'm aware of) that will give you a yes/no for the FIP. That's caused by a virus that many cats carry, and they get ill when it mutates.

Thank-you! I'll get Donny tested right away then.
