Hello all,

I have a five month old British Shorthair. I noticed some ear scratching about a month and a half ago and had the vet take a look. He recommended Advocate, didn't work. We took him in again, ear mites still present, so now we have been cleaning his ears and giving him ear drops once a day (Amitraz) for a week now. I haven't noticed any scratching lately, but his ears are still full of that dark wax/gunk every day. I feel like it's not getting any better and I'm starting to worry. A few questions:

How long does it normally take to treat ear mites?

Is it possible the drops aren't working? (Everything I've read has said that ear mites are easily treated!)

What's the next step if the drops are in fact not working? (I'm going to call the vet tomorrow and possibly take him in again, but I'd just like to know what to expect)

Is the infection possibly doing any long term damage at this point?

Thank you all in advance for your help. I'm a first time cat owner and a chronic worrier :) Also, I'm an American living in Ukraine- I'm 'fluent' in Russian but I lack the vocabulary required to discuss animal health related issues (it's a very specific topic but I'm learning!), so my husband usually does the talking at the vet and sometimes things get lost in translation when he tells me what the vet has said. I'd like to feel more involved in and aware of what's going on with my kitten's health, so any advice/recommendations you have are greatly appreciated.

Thanks again!

Also, a picture or two because I can't help myself :)

Oh he's cute!!  Ear mites can be very stubborn, but I'm wondering if it's a yeast infection.  Has any of the gunk been cultured?

Thanks :) As far as I know, no. Just looked at under the microscope for mites.
