We just bought home a new little guy. He has had a really rough start (was a bottle baby) and came to use with a URI, which the foster mom thought would clear up soon. He has been to the vet, who wasn't too worried about the URI, but gave him meds for a bacterial ear infection. Anyway, I know he will probably drop the symptoms once he has destressed and gotten used to us. Is there anything I can do besides steam to help him out? The drainage is just so icky and uncomfortable looking. I feel bad for the little dude!

Oh, and he also has a stinky butt (stool is clear of critters, just the product of all the junk food he had been eating). Doc gave him probiotics, and the little stinker rejects his food when o try to add them. Tips for getting them in him? Or a better brand than the proplan stuff the vet gave us?

For the URI, you can get Little Remedies Little Noses saline DROPS.  Just put one drop in each nostril a couple of times a day.  That will help clear the nose.  As for the stinky poop, what comes out is directly related to what goes in.  I would look to switch him to a higher quality food, but I think I'd wait and let him get settled, then work on changing his food.  As for getting the probiotics in him, you might try a teaspoon of plain meat baby food and mix them in and then serve.  Be sure you're feeding him canned food a couple of times a day as well as dry food.

Another thing that may help break up the congestion is steam treatments.  Run your shower as hot as you can get it.  Sit with your kitten in the steamy bathroom for about 15-20 minutes 2-3 times day.  This was a big help with my kittens when they had URI's and I have also successfully used this with my adult cats too.
