She has been repeatedly to the vet.Three different vets over the years. They said any first worms ,so she was dewormed$250.Problem persisted ,went back to vet,rewormed.$280
Problem persisted.Tried boiled chicken, tuna,Different brands( weaned properly)Just dry, just wet,Back to the vet full work up.Nothing.sent home with science diet gentle and a $500 bill.My sister just took her to another vet.Possible worms sent home with oral wormer to be administered once daily.$400+. It's gotten to the point of save the house( defecates on oriental
carpets, all things material that happen to be on the floor, anywhere she can get to like under couch, under bed,any corner in house. She urinates on counters,in dog dish( full of water or not),most any empty bowl or dish.dust pan etc.Im sure you get the gist. The cat is so sweet.Rescued from a hoarder and was connected to her umbilical cord which was twisted around the other litter mates in a ballon bouquet- like configuration .I freed the kittens and took her home.I believe she's the sole survivor.

This is the exact heading I was ready to post.

We have a new kitty that has had chronic Diarrhea since we got him. Hes 4 months old now.

I can keep it under control by feeding him PATE wet food only.

If he gets into the dog food, or eats the high protein dry food I have tried to switch him to, he gets diarrhea again.

Try pate, its worth a shot, and pate wet food only.

With mine, I was hoping I wouldn't have to feed him wet food for the rest of his life, but I think I might.

What color is the diarrhea? Has he been treated with antibiotics yet?

In the meantime, you can mix a tablespoon of plain, canned pumpkin into his wet food. This usually helps with diarrhea in cats.

Has he been tested for Tritrichomonas Foetus using the PCR diarrhea panel?  That's where I'd start.

Your cat should also be tested for giardia and coccidia. These are parasites that are not eliminated with worm medicines. They live in the intestines and require specific medications to treat. Both cause diarrhea.

I responded to you 25 days ago that the cat needs testing for more specific parasites. It sounds as though this cat still has not been treated by a vet. Why?

* It sounds like the cat has either Coccidia or Giardia to me. There are specific drugs that a vet can prescribe that will cure both, which would stop the diarrhea.

* Ponazuril is the best drug for Giardia. Neither Giardia nor Coccidia are treated by common worm medicines because they are not worms, but intestinal parasites that cause terrible diarrhea.

I understand that the cat has been treated repeatedly for worms, and the vet bills are high, but it hasn't helped. This is why I suggested that the cat be seen and treated for Giardia or Coccidia.

The cat is unwell and needs treatment to get well. Please take the cat to the vet and ask about Coccidia and/or Giardia treatment. The cat can get better with appropriate veterinary care.

Please let us know if the cat is better after treatment from the vet.

Has the vet discussed or has anybody asked the vet about inflammatory bowel disease? I would want this ruled out if possible.

Food allergy? Have you tried LID foods? What about adding a probiotic?

I agree with the others that this might be giardia or coccidia. Giardia tests in particular may have to be repeated to get a true reading, as false negatives are common. Were stool samples sent to an outside lab? Regular wormers won't work, and bedding, bowls, etc. have to be thoroughly disinfected with bleach, a special disinfectant recommended by the vet, or steam cleaner to prevent reinfection.

you are very fortunate to get success no matter how long you feed him pate. What is the brand? We have tried this to no avail. She Usally is frantic for food and eats and poop pretty much continually.Ive tried diatom earth as well. Slight change in texture and color, not solid poop.Im devastated today because she for the first time won't eat.Im afraid she might be in the early stages of decline.Although she's been declining by way of nutrition she has always eaten.

This cat has been to the vet OVER 8 times. Why have you made an assertion that this cat hadn't? Did you read the entire post? Please do.You will gather from my post that she HAS been to several vets. She has been since I wrote the post. Please understand that vets sometimes are at a loss to what to do.Sometimes vets don't admit they were wrong.I didn't ask for advice to be grilled on why I didn't take her to the vet. With your "help" people will be less likely to seek knowledgable opinions and only the cats will sufferSo madam, don't assume things.Yes the cat was tested for coccidia and giardia.Be that as it may I'm going to try and get her seen again and tested AGAIN as jcat suggested some helpful information that sometimes the vet can pull up a false negative. Thanks to everyone who has responded to help rather than criticize .

I know you have taken her to the vet 8 times, but have you ever considered taking her to an Internal Medicine specialist?

Is there a Vet hospital near you? If there is an ER-Vet, they may have specialists who can help diagnose her.

Or is there a Vet school nearby?

It appears you are trying everything you can find to help your little girl.

Perhaps a specialist can help? If you do go, make sure you have copies of her records from the Vet. Especially since this has been ongoing for a long time. I would also write down everything you have tried to do.

I do not know if this has been suggested before, but have you tried a limited ingredient or a novel protein food?

My guy has IBD (Irritable bowel disease). He is allergic to chicken and who knows what else. No diarrhea, but vomiting.

That is usually from an allergy to a certain type of protein and/or additives in the food. I am using Natures Variety Pride line. The regular Natures Variety is a very good food.

I think that is what StephenQ was trying to get at.

Also, have you tried a probiotic? I use Proviable which I get from Chewy.com   Personally, I would not use Fort-flora because it contains animal byproducts--it could contain chicken.  Forty-Flora is a good probiotic, but not for my guy.

Hopefully this is helpful.

Hi Loopycann!  I am so sorry you and your sister are going through this.  I rescued 4 kittens and they had this.  They would poop and pee everywhere.  They had both Giardia nor Coccidia and it took a few rounds to get rid of it,  Meanwhile FortiFlora for cats works amazing to control diarrhea.  It has worked on every one of my cats.  Constantly changing the food causes tummy troubles, as  well.  I would try a food with duck, rice and/or lamb for a little while.  Wellness kitten formula is also very gentle on their stomach.  If your sister is stressed out and at her wits end, they can also sense that.  I know its weird, but it is true. Stress and nerves can cause these issues.  Baby food also helped my little ones, but only first stage.  Only broth and chicken in the ingredients.  No other spices.   I hope this helped

I have this same problem. With 2 different cats. 1st cat it was horrible. It was literally liquid coming out of her butt. You could not even scoop it out of the litter box. I literally had to pour it out and replace the whole litter every time. I tried EVERYTHING. I combing this website for months trying to look for answers. Taking her to vet was miserable because she would have diarrhea inside the pet carrier inside the car. Lots and lots of baths. I got so scratched up. You know what? And got dewormed with 3 different meds. You know what I did? I got so tired of it, I stopped ALL commercial cat food and gave her plain boiled chicken - that's it. Nothing but chicken all day. It was amazing. Her stools completely firmed up. She had amazing well formed healthy looking stools. And, crazy enough, she would only poop once every THREE days. Because her body is using all the nutrients and there's very little waste. Now, I know this is very impractical to try to do just chicken, but it helped me DIAGNOSE the problem. I know NOW the problem is not worms. The problem is she cannot digest a lot of grains. Avoid gluten. Corn. You just have to try to see which ones they can't have. Anyway, that resale worked for that one cat. I rescue cats and adopt them out, so she has been adopted out. Now I have a new cat with similar problem. But not as bad. I don't really know if it's really diarrhea. She only has one bowel movement a day but it's soft. Not watery, still forms a clump in the litter. Can see the impression of a log but definitely softer than I would like. And sometimes there's blood. The reason I haven't taken her to get is because the minute I'm ready to take her to vet - it gets better, and stools firm up. Just like when you take your car to mechanic all of the sudden it doesn't make that loud noise any more. I tried the chicken thing again but didn't work this time this girl is so picky, she doesn't like chicken. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Please don't say, "take her to the vet." That's not helpful. Thanks

A cat can't live on nothing but chicken or any other muscle meat alone.  If you're going to feed raw it's imperative that you do your research.  Cats have to have taurine or they will suffer serious health problems.  All that said, raw diets working shockingly well for cats with IBD and chronic diarrhea.

Sounds like she'd do well on a homecooked meal. You might consider ordering this pre-mix. All you have to do is cook up chicken or whatever meat you want (boneless) and follow the instructions for how much to use and you've got a complete meal! There's an article on their page about using probiotics too. Probiotics are basically a cure for soft stool issues that are food related.
