I just got my iPod Nano 7th generation
I got it using reward points and the product description was basic. So I had no idea that the Nano only works on the most current version of iTunes (version 12) which only works on Windows 7 or higher
My home computer is Windows Vista and I'm running version 11 of iTunes. Is there any way to use the Nano on my home computer? I posted this question on an iPod forum (not the one on the Apple web site) and while over 100 people have looked at the post, no one has responded

But not all is lost. My work laptop is on Windows 7 and I have a fairly current version of iTunes (it's version 12-something but I haven't updated it yet to the most recent version) so at least I can get my iPod set up that way. While I have some songs on my work laptop, everything I want on my Nano is on the home computer. Can I export my home computer iTunes library to my work laptop iTunes even with the different versions of iTunes? I really don't like to use my work laptop for personal stuff since the company tracks everyone's computer usage

Maybe I need to take a trip to the Apple Store for some help with a Genius? My home computer is a desktop so it's not possible to bring that with me.

Rick's computer is Vista and I've used it for my iPod. When they come out with new iTunes upgrades, I don't upgrade every time (maybe I should, I guess).

I have a 7th generation Nano, and am using iTunes 11; I just checked. I don't know why yours only works with iTunes 12; that's weird.

We're using Win 7 at work, too, and I've used it to charge up my Nano (and my Fitbit, too, for that matter). It charges, but I don't use iTunes at work, so it doesn't sync.

I'm sorry, not much help here.

Odd

I just checked the tech specs for the Nano and for a PC, Windows 7 or higher and iTunes version 12.2 or higher is required. Apple apparently has dropped Windows Vista from the operating systems that works with current and future versions of iTunes. Digging some more, the last version of iTunes that worked with Vista was version 12.1.2.27.

Which version 11 of iTunes do you have? Mine might be a little older than yours so it might just not work with the Nano. I can't remember the exact version number but it might be 11.1.something. I'll have to check when I get home. I might be able to get a working version from here.

I'm still going to look into somehow making a copy of my iTunes library and getting it onto my work laptop somehow.

I know, I should look into upgrading from Vista to 7 or maybe 10 at some point

@Winchester my iTunes version is 11.3.1.2 Is that the same version you have or do you have a slightly more updated version? My old iTunes at least recognizes the Nano but gives me an error message saying that the most current version of iTunes is required. But the new version of iTunes won't install because it doesn't support Vista

I'm not home right now, but will check. I will also see if I can sync to Rick's computer. Hang on a bit and I will get back to you. It won't be right away.

OK. I just plugged in my iPod to Rick's Vista computer. It synced with no trouble and is now charging.

Rick's computer (running Vista)  has iTunes version 11.0.1.12. When I opened iTunes, it said there is an upgrade, but I declined to upgrade.

My computer (running Windows 10) has iTunes version 11.1.5.5. When I opened iTunes, it said there is an upgrade, but I declined to upgrade.

Rick's computer and my computer share music libraries.

I have a Nano 7th generation; got it when I put my last Nano (also a 7th)  through the washer
. Before that, I had a 5th generation, which I also put through the washer.

I'm sorry....I don't know what to tell you.

Would this link help you?  http://apple.stackexchange.com/ques...-a-windows-vista-laptop-says-i-need-windows-7

It's ok, Winchester. I did get a respone on the iPod board and the anwer is no a Nano 7th generation can't be used on Windows Vista. I replied back about another person being able to use the same generation Nano on Windows vista and Windows 10 that both run on older versions of iTunes and I was confused why I couldn't. I haven't gotten a respone to that yet. I may just have to copy the library in my home computer to my work laptop if I can figure out how to do that.

I don't know why I can use Rick's computer....I'm thinking that maybe it has something to do with sharing the music libraries, but I don't know that for a fact.

Rick used my computer a couple of times since I went to Win 10. He asked me if I'd upgrade his computer to 10 and when I told him I couldn't, he was peeved. He doesn't like Vista anymore than I did, thinks it's their worst operating system ever and wants it upgraded. I can't! He is not amused.

I haven't found easy to understand instructions on how to copy a library from one computer to another yet. I asked on the iPod board and the brief response from a mod came across as really snarky
I assume I need a flash drive or something to move the file onto so I can then move the file to my work computer?

Rick's computer and my computer are in the same room (not that that matters) and we're both on the wireless network, so all I had to do was make my library Public, so that I could get Rick's computer to pick it up. I was able to get Rick's computer to pick up the wireless printer, too. There are some files that I had to make Public, so that Rick's computer could pick them up. I really wonder if that's why I can use my iPod on Rick's computer; that whole Public/sharing libraries thing.

But yes, you're going to need a flash drive (large enough for all your songs) to copy your music from your computer and then put it on your iTunes on your work computer. Or if your drive isn't that big, just copy a few songs here and there as you go.

I Homegrouped my computer to my laptop, which makes it really nice to share stuff back and forth. But because Rick has Vista
, it doesn't play nice with Homegroups and I can't include his computer.
