I know this is a DUMB question, but I haven't had a cat in heat in my house since I was a little kid. Now I remember why. Omg, the racket! lol.

The shelter was not able to spay her before she was adopted out because of the cold she had (it had recurred a couple of times). They decided it was better to adopt her out with the voucher to spay within a month. Of course, because it's the holidays (not sure why that matters actually) they might not be even able to get her an appt at this place before the holidays are over. Which brings up the whole "will I be in breach of contract for not bringing her in by the end of the month" but that's another subject altogether. Trying to get a hold of folks is a bit difficult when your hours don't mesh.

Anyway, Miss Penelopy is new here and my boys - thank god they are neutered already! - just look at her like she's crazy while carrying on and rubbing all over everything in the house.

Oh my! We went through this same thing about this time last year!  The only way to end a heat cycle is to get her spayed now, BUT that's a much more dangerous surgery, so it's best to ride it out and schedule the spay for about 2 weeks away.

What we did to help us and our little girl was to isolate her in a spare bedroom with all the amenities.  When we let her out, she was either in a large wire dog crate or a carrier.  She was calmer if contained and my male cat would leave her alone.  Otherwise, he was trying to mount her and all that.  He is also neutered, so nothing could've happened, thank goodness!  We would also put all of our other kitties in a room and then let our little girl out to roam the house.  Thankfully, our girl wasn't excessively vocal.

Unfortunately, I have to wait until they set me up for the spay surgery via the shelter, so it won't be for awhile. Here I was hoping it could be done next week!

Oh my, I'm really thankful my boys could care less there's a girl in the house. I guess they are still in that "ick, girls!" stage? They're six and a half months old so not sure. Either way, they're neutered - yay! Also thankful that, while she's quite vocal, she's nothing like the Siamese we used to have. Omg, that was awful!

Acupressure for a cat in heat, a friend showed me this, just grabbed kitty when yowling pressed down gently on her rear area. It quieted her right down for 3 hours or so, video shows what breeders do to give the cat some  Temporary Relief.

Found just pressing down on either side of tail worked just for a few seconds, not so detailed was fine. If your males are fixed they shouldn't spray but have heard they can still spray even when fixed. So if they sprayed before getting fixed they may or may not do it. You might want to separate her from annoying the males to much they might end up telling her when they've had enough.  **At least you can get some

I got my boys fixed as soon as possible (13 weeks in their case). So thankfully, they did not spray. I will definitely try this stuff out.

I am definitely not taking home anyone from a shelter not already spayed again. Ok, I shouldn't say that, I might. But I hope I don't, lol.

You don't really want her in heat when she's spayed as that's a much more dangerous surgery due to her girlie parts being engorged.  It can be done, but it's best to wait until she's out of heat.  I would also see if you could find a low-cost vet to do the spay at a time where you can schedule it so she's out of heat.  Maybe the shelter can give you a voucher to have it done someplace else.

Oh, that much I knew, also because they are more likely to hemorrhage.

The only low-cost place I'm aware of is the Tree House spay/neuter clinic, and even that requires doing an appt well ahead of time because so many people are trying to get their pets in there. I had my boys fixed there and made the appt three weeks ahead of time. Plus this time of year there's no parking because of school being in session (there's a school right across the street). There's a vet literally right next to me (which is where my vet is) but for neutering they charged an arm and a leg, so can only imagine how much a spay would cost.

My tortoise shell rescue was around five months when she went into heat. The vet said to wait a few weeks before spaying which I did. I had it done about a month later and she is fine.

Beautiful kitties would love to see more photos!
Thank you! If you mean the ones in my avatar, those are my 6.5-month-old kittens. I think that was when they were about 8-10 weeks old.

I have to wait until after the holidays anyway because of the shelter's spay/neuter schedule being full (due to the holidays). I ended up getting a month's extension on my contract to spay her so I'm glad about that.

When I got my kittens I wanted to get them fixed ASAP because I wouldn't even want to get to this point. Hence my boys getting neutered when they did. SO glad I didn't wait till they were 6 months. I'd be paranoid right about now if so.
