Hello,

I am new here and stumbled upon this site while searching information on heart murmurs. I took in a kitten from a coworker about two weeks ago, and a grade 5 heart murmur was detected when I took him in for his vaccinations last week. Per the recommendation of my vet, I took little Otis to a cardiologist yesterday. He was diagnosed with a PDA. As he is only 12 weeks old and 2.9 lbs., they do not want to operate until he has gained a few more pounds. We started him on Vetmedin (cardiac med generally for dogs with congestive heart failure) and a diuretic to help prevent any clinical symptoms of CHF until he can be operated on. I am happy that his condition is something that can potentially be corrected and offer a normal life expectancy, but am quite anxious about waiting a month or more and only monitoring his condition in the meantime. Has anyone else had an experience with PDA in a kitten? I want him to have the best fighting chance possible, and am so worried about my little guy. I have two older kitties, one of which is a 6 year old boy, and they have been inseparable ever since little Otis joined our family. We would all be heartbroken if our new little buddy boy were to suffer any complications.

I don't have experience with PDA. Maybe you can tell us what it's an abbreviation of and what you know about it.

Diuretics in cats can cause kidney failure (and put my CHF cat into it) so I'm surprised a bit that your vet is using it in advance of a chf problem. Is it Lasix? In any case be careful and consider discussing this more fully with your vet.

I found this article on pda. http://www.vet.cornell.edu/hospital/Services/Companion/Cardiology/conditions/PDA.cfm

An update for anyone who read this before...two months Otis was on his meds and finally gained enough weight to have his operation. It was very stressful for his human parents, but he made it through successfully, and after a couple of days in the hospital, he came home to us with his PDA successfully repaired. He recovered for a week or so, and has since been thriving. He was taken off of his meds, and is now super active and strong!! He is such a joy and I am so thankful for the care he received. He will now enjoy a normal, healthy life. He will go in for a six month checkup in August, bit all seems to have gone well. Thank you for replying!
