Hi, my cat used to be a stray, we took her in cause she had wounds on her so we treated her and now she's like a part of the family. However, she's been struggling with excessive scratching, licking and biting on her own body. She'd scratch until her face bleeds, bite and lick her own body until to a point where you can see her own pink skin and the wound is most of the time wet. We already placed the cone on her for a few months so that the wounds on the face heals and the moment we take it out, she starts scratching and licking again. What do I do?

Thank you for rescuing her! Have you considered a skin scraping to look for mites, or considered asking your vet to treat her for mites regardless? I say this because I've heard mites don't always show in skin scrapings. Does she get flea meds? What does the vet think about this-- and what did they try?

It's also possible she has an allergy to something in her food. What are you feeing her?

Poor kid, she does look miserable.

I've seen mites do this kind of damage. I've also seen bedbugs do serious damage, kitty will chew and chew, till the little tummy is bleeding and scabs forming. The b.b. will bite in places where it is hard for a cat to scratch, so they bite and chew and draw blood. Check around ears, paws, and check for like a tiny pimple-size bump(s) on the body. I pray this is just a letter that's read, it's a horrible problem. Hope your kitty gets better [emoji]128591[/emoji]

Bed bugs don't like fur, so they'd likely go where the fur was thinnest, like around the ears. With this kind of skin damage, I'm sure they'd have seen the bed bugs at this point. [emoji]128529[/emoji] Might be worth looking for fleas, though, or other critters. It's possible it's something like a fungal infection or even some kind of auto immune issue.

Is it a food allergy or lack of attention?  My older Siamese Angel will yank on her flank and pull hair out when she doesn't get enough attention.

Did you change litter recently, my cat was really shredding himself, once I went back to his low scent litter it cleared up. Cute kitty BTW and you are awesome for saving a stray
