My cats won't eat dry food

Bear with me, this will be long winded...

I have two personal cats, 2 (K) and 4 (K) years old. They have been eating Merrick Before Grain. This summer, I found a young pregnant cat (O). She was fine with the Merrick, too. Turns out she was pregnant, and shelters were full so I kept her. I was given some bags of Instinct healthy weight. When I ran out of Merrick, they started eating the Instinct, no problems. The kittens are now 4 months old. On the 16th, I realized I was running out of Instinct, and decided to switch them all back to Merrick. So I bought a bag, and started the transition. On the 20th, O and the kittens were spayed and neutered. On the 21st, the Instinct was gone, so I was feeding them all Merrick. Now none of them will eat it. Not even my original two, who normally eat anything. I thought maybe the kittens weren't feeling well after surgery, but they were hungry. They just didn't want the dry food. And it's all if them, not just O and the kittens. K&K were s/n a long time ago. They will eat wet food and plain chicken. With so many cats in the house, I really need them to eat dry food. I don't mind feeding wet food in addition to dry, but it can't be the only thing they eat. I can't afford it. I thought maybe the Merrick was bad, so I bought a different brand, Under the Sun. They are eating it a little, but still clamor for food every time I'm in the kitchen.

Anyone have thoughts on why all of a sudden none of them want to eat dry food? They are all active, drinking enough water, using the litter box fine, no diarrhea, no sneezing or anything else to indicate illness. I'm still feeding wet food because I don't want them to make themselves sick by not eating. I had to get some incisions rechecked, and two of the kittens had lost a little weight and were dehydrated. I'm not going to stop the wet food, but I need suggestions for getting them back on dry food.

Go back to the Instinct. Many cats are stubborn and don't like a change to their food.

Make sure they have plenty of access to water as dry food can dehydrate.

Maybe you could ask your local pet supply store for free samples to try. At least you won't waste your money and return the open bag the won't eat to the store if you still have your receipt.

I can't afford it. I have 7 cats, and it's over $3 per pound. I would never have fed them the Instinct if it hadn't been given to me. I know cats can be stubborn, but I can't understand how not one of the seven will eat either the merrick or under the sun.

I thought about that, but I dont want to keep switching food. I'm afraid to have seven cats with diarrhea.

Did you try mixing the instinct in with the food you're reintroducing them to? A slow transition?

None of my cats have ever suddenly switched, but when we got our kitten she hated dry food. We used to mix some dry in with her wet food then over a couple of weeks put less wet food in and more dry until she had it completely dry. She either didn't notice or began to gather a taste for it. That worked for us :)

mine doesn't either.

i've tried everything, but he simply hates dry food.

maybe if your cat doesn't like it, don't feed them that.

Just a thought - if they have really gone off their dry food and only want wet, you could look into getting some of those big 13oz  cans of Friskies pate - I just looked on Chewy and you can get a pack of twelve 13oz cans for $11.85, which is a pretty good deal.   You get a much better deal on wet food if you buy the big cans in bulk like that.   Maybe go to the grocery store and get some various Friskies cans (pate only, not the chunky kinds) to see which flavors they like.    The Friskies pate varieties really aren't a bad food, and it's very economical to feed in a multi-cat household.

Yes, I started on the 16th, and the Instinct was gone by the 21st. Thanks for all of your suggestions. I think I'm going to just suck it up and buy another bag of Instinct and keep trying to transition them over. I was trying to avoid this, since I'm not even sure they will eat the Instinct at this point.

My cats have diarrhea and vomiting but they can eat Friskies Indoor canned food. When finances are tight I've fed them Purina Naturals in the green bag from Walmart. They love it ! I even did a taste test with Blue Buffalo chicken Wilderness , Taste of the Wild (a sample ) and the Purina Naturals they ate all the Purina before anything else. I have the opposite problem my cats love junk food. They won't touch any canned food that isn't Friskies in gravy.
