Hey everyone. Last week I noticed my 4 yr old male orange-cream tabby Mr. Guiseppe Meow ("Meow") was not acting like himself. Sitting oddly on his hip and trying to pee (everywhere!) with no success. Wednesday,The day before Thanksgiving we rushed him to the Glen Mills Animal Hospital here in Delaware County Pennsylvania. We found out he had a completely blocked urethra. Sad,Overwelming,Expensive,Long story, short-- the vet catherized him under anesthesia and drained his very full bladder. He was prescribed pain medicine, muscle relaxants, antibiotics and special canned wet food then we took him home to heal. Thanksgiving day we cancelled our plans. SO thankful our boy Meow was on the mend. At first he was peeing small amounts very often then larger amounts less often. The vet said hydration was key! So we took a can of tuna in WATER added about another 2 cups water, blended it then drained out the tuna that was left. MEOW loved it and drank a ton of it. This really helped him pee more then ever. HOWEVER, we noticed that when he sleeps, he leaks urine. At first we thought it was the muscle relaxant or pain med but he is done those medications and still leaking. It is now Tuesday the 1st of December, Meow is using his litter box but still has a wet spot under him almost every time he gets up after sleeping or cat napping. Is this incontinence forever now that he's had this urinary obstruction??? If anyone has had a similar experience I would really appreciate some insight. I love this cat! His personality is so friggen cute! Funny & affectionate! He brings so much joy to my life and I hate to see him this way.

Oh no, how stressful to have happen over Thanksgiving!!

This is a common issue after a urinary blockage.   It's not unusual to experience leakage even after all meds have been finished off,   The incontinence will get better with time, it's just going to take some time to go back to normal.  He won't be like this forever, but he may be a little "leaky" for a couple weeks.    Maybe put some extra towels over all his snooze spots and just wait it out....unpleasant as it is!

To prevent future blockages, hydration is the most important thing - get a water fountain for your cat, feed an all-wet diet (or as close to that as you can), don't feed any fishy foods, etc.      I really like this product called "Tinkle Tonic" - you can get it off Amazon, it really works wonders for some kitties.      The more liquid you get in the cat the less likely he is to block in the future (and I hate to say it, but once you have a blocked cat, they are going to be prone to have it happen again) - just get all the water you can into the cat
