Ever since we got our cat we have had problems with her stool and diet. She was 5 months when we got her and shortly after she started throwing up a lot with diarrhea. We took her to the vet and dewormed her, and it got rid of the vomiting and diarrhea. However, her stool is still soft all the time. I also found out by trial and error that she has food allergys. Although her stool is always soft, it will turn to diarrhea if she eats anything other than chicken or turkey based wet food. I just cant get it to solidify. Right now she is about 8 to 9 months old and still very small, maybe 6 to 7 pounds, and I feed her anywhere from 3 to 4 cans of wet food a day (3 oz cans), some days maybe more if she eats the other cats food. Is that too much for her and causing the soft stool? And if it is what can I do, because she is always hungry. Usually after i feed her a full can, an hour or two later when i go to the kitchen she is meowing for more.

Right now I feed her and the other 2 cats purina pro plan, but she only gets the chicken and turkey. There are probably 6 or 7 different types of this brand that I feed her that I rotate. Turkey and rice, turkey and vegetable, chicken and rice, chicken and vegetables, and so on. No pasta as that also upsets her stomach. Is that too much variety for her and need to stick to a few?

Another thing Ive been trying to do is get her on dry food, but she will not touch it. I have tried so many different brands but she wont budge. Ive tried putting a small amount in her wet food and she either will eat around it, or just not eat it at all and ask for something else. This is really starting to become a problem now because when she goes to the bathroom, number 2, and its soft she will either step in it or get some on and around her you know what then brings it into and all over the house.

Im almost thinking another vet visit is needed. Only problem is we just spent 2k on our other cat who ate some string so finances are tight. So i wanted to see if I could get any help or advice first before I do that.

We feed one of our cats wet food twice a day and I haven't noticed soft stool at all. He has bad kidneys so he has to be on the prescription diet. I would try a different brand of wet food and see if the issue is resolved :)

You can mix some plain pumpkin into her food.

How many times was she dewormed?  It takes 2-3 treatments to kill all the worms in a cycle.

And she could be hungry; kittens can eat a lot of food.  Maybe you could leave some dry food down in addition.  Have you tried going grain free?  She could have allergies in addition to proteins.

I would wait a while and if it gets better, then don't worry about it. Wait until you can afford it in case it gets worse.

Yeah Im just leaving petsmart now with a few new brands. Ive tried this before and got 3 new brands and after she ate the first one she threw it up, and the others she didnt like. Thats the other issue, with how hungry and how much she eats, she only likes the purina pro plan. She has eaten a few other brands, but when I try to feed her a second time with that brand she doesnt touch it. She is so picky.

What will the pumpkin do for her? We've only dewormed her once, and that was hell lol. I had to give her 1 pill one day, and another pill 2 weeks later. I went thru 4 pills, 2 were wasted. We tried to cut it up and give it to her but she would just spit it out lol, no matter what or how we did it. So we had to cut crush it and mix it with her food, even then she knew what we were trying to do and wouldnt eat the food or just eat a little of it.

I mean I do have the money, but I'm extremely tight right now with the holidays. I had to get a "carecredit" credit card for the cat who ate the string, so I can use that if need.

Also Id recommend to any of you who are tight on money or dont want to pay a big vet bill all at once, to check out carecredit. You do have to have perfect credit tho...my dad had to cosign to help us. But its 6 months no interest if paid in full. It also works for people, but only with dentists and specialty doctors

Pumpkin can help to firm stools. It sounds like the deworming may not have been thorough. I would definitely speak to the vet about doing it again. Could be causing the loose stool.

I don't think wet food simply by virtue of being wet food causes loose stool.  Generally speaking wet food will mean less stool in terms of volume because it has fewer fillers.  That is generally speaking, there are some dry foods with fewer fillers than some wet foods.  A food sensitivity or allergy can cause soft stools.  Since this has been an issue since getting her as a kitten than I think it could well still be parasites.  If the usual float test shows nothing, or another deworming doesn't work then I would ask about a fecal PCR test.  It has to be sent out and does cost more than the float test done in the vet's office.  It can detect some parasites and bacterial overgrowth that the float test doesn't detect.

I would ask the vet to do a PCR diarrhea panel to make sure there's not some weird parasite thing going on.  Then, you might need to try a grain free or limited ingredient diet.  It's possible it's the brand of food.  I would put her on ONE kind of food and do that for a few weeks to see how she does on it.  You might also need to get some rx food from the vet for kitties with sensitive tummies.

Now when you say pumpkin, what should I buy? Like a pumpkin flavor wet food?

I was suppose to bring them a sample of her stool a few weeks ago, but that was when the other cat ate the string. What all could they see from the stool sample? Probabl a dumb questiom, but Would they be able to see food allergies from the sample?

Also when you say one kind of food, do you mean one brand AND one flavor? Or can I give her a few varieties of that brand and flavor?

One brand, one flavor, so if you're feeding Purina One, make it Purina One Chicken.  (Or whatever you're feeding.)  In other words, don't rotate.

Awesome, thank you so much you all! Ill definitely try the pumpkin. If she likes it that could help get her on some new food by making it taste better.

For her, since she has stomach and stool issues, she always stays on the same brand. But like I was saying I will give her 2 different flavors with a few varieties of each. If I give her the same thing every time she gets bored and wont eat :( but like LTS3 was saying, I think she would be ok doing that. One brand, two varieties.

Luckily she ate some of the new food, i had to open 3 cans before she liked one, and she eventually ate one of the other. Of the two she liked, one was Nutro and the one she really liked was blue healthy gourmet. Has anyone heard of these brands? I also let her try another for dinner, Authority, and she seemed to be ok with it but didnt eat as much as she normally does
