I finally got the word from Microsoft that it was OK to upgrade my Win 8.1 computer to Win 10. Heck I think that was back in August that I had gotten a blip from Microsoft, asking if I wanted 10. Anyway, it finally pulled through the other day. I hemhawed around for a couple of days, but decided to go for it today. Easy. Truly. I think it probably took about an hour for the computer to go through its paces, do the set up, do the upgrade, restart itself several times, etc. Again, I got rid of some stuff that I didn't want to deal with. Checked to make sure that all my programs worked OK. PSP 7 works, iTunes is fine, my Fitbit app works, Kasperksy is working well; it updated right away, did a scan. Office is fine, everything seems to be OK.

Now, I just hope it stays that way!

( was worried about iTunes because I had heard that iTunes doesn't play nice with Win 10. Seems to be OK.

Thus far:

Pros:
  • NO CHARMS!!!!
  • All my files are fine, at least so far. I see nothing that's missing, nothing where it shouldn't be.
  • NO CHARMS!!!!
  • No problems with my wireless printer
  • And did I mention.....NO CHARMS!!!!
Cons:
  • Windows 10 starts up and shuts off considerably slower than 8.1 (With 8.1, it was boom, boom, running! Not so with 10)
  • It seems to take longer to open my programs
  • When I just plugged my iPod into the computer to charge, it said that some of my songs were missing. They're not; they're there, so I don't know what's going on. Also, when I normally plug the iPod in, iTunes will automatically open and it will start to sync. In Windows 10, I'm having to open iTunes and tell it to sync. I don't know if that's just temporary, until it remembers things as I use the computer or what's going on. But iTunes does work and does play and it will sync.
  • Start screen is....weird. I thought the old Start screen would be back. However, the stupid tiles are still there and I haven't figured out how to get rid of them. Weather tile, News tile, Phone Companion tile, Store tile, Movies and TV tile, and so on. Don't need them, don't want them. How to get rid of them? Anybody know?
ETA: Never mind. Tiles are gone.

Congratulations! I upgraded a couple of weeks ago, and DH a few days ago, both of us from Windows 7, which was slower than 10. It's a bit hard to find some things at first, and customizing the Start menu by unpinning and pinning was something new - glad you figured it out. You can change the size of the tiles by right-clicking, too.

DH hasn't had trouble with any of his programs so far, as he feared. I had to replace my old (Windows XP) Paintshop Pro X, but that hadn't been working properly with Windows 7 and an update was overdue.

I've had it for a while. My computer alerted me to it the minute it was ready to download. I have had 2 prominent hiccups. One being that my trackpad has a mind of it's own and when I go into the settings and disable things that bother me (like pinch zoom) it doesn't remember the settings and goes back to factory settings randomly on it's own and on reboot. The other is my speakers crackle from time to time, like a static radio. My husband had the same issue with his. When I called HP about it they said my computer wasn't approved for windows 10 (not sure why they allowed me to download it if that was the case) but I can't bear to roll back to windows 8.1 because I hated it with a passion and I like 10 so much more (even with it's glitches!)

What did you replace your PSP X with? I have PSP X, but am not overly fond of it and never installed it on the Windows 8.1 computer. I still like PSP 7.....I'm like a cat that way who doesn't like change, I guess; I like the way 7 works and I like the fact that Animation Shop is right in with PSP. When I restarted my computer last night, PSP 7 is no longer working properly and my brushes, shapes, textures, etc have all been copied to my 2015 Photos. I have no idea why. When I clicked on PSP 7, it was able to bring pictures up, but wouldn't open them. I uninstalled PSP 7, but am thinking about trying to re-install it tonight. It worked OK on 8.1, except that the Help section wouldn't come up. There's a certain .dll file that's needed for some of the older Help programs (PSP 7, WordPerfect, for example) and without that little .dll file, I can't run Help. I'm not sure which one it is or I'd find it and add it to the system. I never really used Help that much on PSP, so I've never really missed it; for the most part I either figured it out on my own or worked with numerous tutorials online. One of my GFs and I took several PSP classes, too, and they really helped.

I have the newest Creative Suite, which has Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Flash, LightRoom, etc. Not having PSP 7 on my computer might give me the impetus I need to finally start using Photoshop once and for all. What happens is that I open Photoshop, look at everything, sigh loudly, close it, then open PSP and do what I need to do.
I am using Creative Suite here at work, so there's no reason to be so lazy at home.

I turned the computer off this morning and, basically, clicked on the Power button and snap! Off! So change the con to a pro, although it does take longer to start Win 10 than it did 8.1.

Once I got used to Win 8.1 and changed it to suit me, I was fine with it. It wasn't really all that bad, except for those blasted charms and I couldn't wait to get rid of the things. Hated those charms. Hated them, I say! The fact that Win 10 does not have them is a step in the right direction. Got my Start screen straightened out. I think it'll be OK.

No speaker problems; I was playing music last night and they were fine. I read somewhere last night that if you don't use your Windows Defender, after so many weeks, they will turn it on automatically. I'm not using it because I use Kaspersky. I'll have to keep an eye on that.

Got the update notice now on my laptop.....I may let that stay at 8.1 for now. Maybe I can change it over in a couple of weeks or so.

Rick asked me about updating the union's computer to 10. I told him that I think we'll just let that one go. The only thing they really use it for is the monthly minutes (which I type) and Rick uses it for his union financial records. That's pretty much it.

I got Paintshop Pro X8 because it specifically said it worked on Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 7 and Windows 10. I figured it would be good if I ever decided to downgrade to Windows 7 again or install 8.1 (my laptop came with both). I haven't tried to install any new brushes or fonts, but all my old psp images are working.

I am glad you like it. I still have Windows 7. Hubby's desktop had Windows 8.1. He did the Windows 10 download and likes it better than 8.1. But I hated the 8.1 when I tried to use his computer. I can't find any files, a search engine, nothing. I hate it. We bought a new Lenovo laptop which was 8.1 and he had our computer guru change the startup page to look like windows 7. He has not upgraded the laptop and I don't know if he will.

I have read some things about how the W/10 program spies on everything you do. Is that a fact or is there someway to modify that in the setup.

I know I am stuck in Windows 7 and can't get up nerve to go forward. :lol3:

I don't know about the Windows 10 spying, but I haven't synched my laptop with my Android phone and tablet, which is possible now, and have no intention of doing so. I assume all the OS have too much of one's personal info. I disable or uninstall a lot of preinstalled apps as a matter of course.

My laptop came with both Windows 7 and 8.1, and I'd heard so many negative things about 8.1 that I installed 7. I figured if I hated 10 after getting it I'd just revert back to 7. Windows 7 will eventually no longer be supported, so why not go with 10 while it's still free?

That's pretty much why I upgraded to 10, too. It's only a matter of time before they stop any support for 7 (in my case 8), so this gives me a head-start. I have PSP X, but I don't really care for it. Maybe I'll just start with Photoshop at home, too.

Barbara, I can tell you that I disabled a lot of stuff on Win 10, simply because I think it's too invasive. I didn't sync anything with my phone or laptop to the computer, nor do I plan on doing so.

...and when they do stop supporting 7, I will be needing your help with 10 and I'm sure by then you will be a pro at it

You have a while before you have to worry about it. Extended support for Windows 7 doesn't end until January 14, 2020.
 You're good for a while!
