Hello all cat owners, I really need your help! I'm losing my mind!

My 9 year-old girl is a CKD cat, recently diagnosed after I took her to the vet because she was insisting in peeing in a corner of the carpet.

That corner was thoroughly cleaned with enzyme cleaners which is also quite sweet so I heard that tends to be a smell they avoid.

About 2 weeks ago she peed in that corner again. After all the right treatment, what I did was to move her food bowl there, as cats don't pee near their food. That was working well, however yesterday she decided to pee in the corner right in front of it, even though it's just a few centimetres away from her food bowl! She really insists in peeing in that area!

This seems to only happen in the early hours of the morning when I'm still sleeping and can't hear her (however yesterday I caught her red handed!). You may say that she's lazy and doesn't want to get out of the bedroom in the middle of the night, but she has no problem at all when it comes to do her poo in the right place or to go to the kitchen to drink water.

You also may say that despite all my efforts that corner is not really that clean and she still can smell it. Alright, I can even accept this theory, but I really need to know what else I can do because my cleaning was not light-hearted (I even lifted the carpet to spray the enzyme thing under it, it took me 1 whole week of daily cleaning!)

I'm losing my mind and I don't knwo what else to do! She cries if she can't sleep in the bedroom and it breaks my heart, but I can't carry on having my carpet as a toilet bowl!

ANY IDEAS ARE WELCOME! HELP, PLEASE!

Have tried that a month ago and it worked the same way as the food bowl - she went in the corner right in front!

Also, it's my bedroom so I don't really like the idea of officiating it as her bathroom!

Have you taken her in for a Vet visit lately.  Usually when cats do this, they are trying to tell you something, and that something is normally that they have a UTI.  Since you've already said she is a kidney cat, I would suspect she might have one.  (I have a kidney cat too, so know where you AND she are  coming from)

Next, if you only have one litter box, then I would definitely recommend a 2nd one...especially since she is a kidney cat.  As you are probably aware, kidney cats drink more than the average cat, therefore, urinate more than the average cat, and sometimes when you gotta go, you gotta go!

As to the enzyme cleaner, you mentioned you are using a spray?  I would suggest you use something that you pour on.  You need to soak the area all the way down to the carpet pad   The only way to really get it done well is to pour it on and let it soak in and dry (as far as I know....we pulled up all our carpets after our FIRST kidney cat and put down tile floors throughout the house...so much easier!)  Also, it really depends on which enzyme cleaner you are using...they are not all created alike
.  Worst case scenario, put down aluminum foil on the floor there.  Cats hate foil.

BUT, I really think the whole thing may be a UTI, and if you get that taken care of.., voila

She was only diagnosed last month and at that time she also had antibiotics because she did probably have an UTI (which was when she was peeing in the wrong places). She had about 2 or 3 weeks that she behaved very well, and then started again, with a week in between. Would an UTI come back so fast?

I had a kidney cat who used to do the same thing--peed right in front of the box.  I put one of these washing machine drain pans down, lined it with puppy pads and put the litter box on top of that.  It doesn't solve the problem of the peeing but it keeps the urine contained and off of the carpet.

Something like this.

Genius!

Rennielondon, if there's one thing I've learned about cats it's that you need to pick your battles. One extra litter box for your failing kitty versus struggling to stop her from peeing in that corner and constantly cleaning up after her?

My girl had her UTI come back in less than a month.  Sometimes one dose of antibiotics doesn't do the trick
.  Her symptoms went away almost instantly, but then returned within 3 weeks.

Same happened with my Sara earlier in the year. They gave her a shot (I forget what the drug was) the first time around. Then it came back, so they gave her Orbax, if I remember correctly.

Yes, the shot (Convenia), doesn't really work too well on UTIs.  That's what Callie got too.  She's impossible to pill, so that's the way we went.  Better than nothing, but took two rounds

I am SO THANKFUL that Sara is easy to pill. Just pop those pills into those pill popper treats and she's happy as a clam. I'm having to give her five separate pills (well, mostly half pills) right now so yeah, I'm quite thankful for that. Antibiotic, pepcid (she was having foamy puke), and hyper-t meds.

I just wanted to bring something to your attention. I have a cat that came to me one winter that I took in. It had peeing issues that turned out to be a Urinary Tract Infection. She was just trying to tell me she hurt. She has done this three times now and to help I feed her dry food especially for urinary tract infections. I take her to vet as soon as she does it and he gives her a two week lasting antibiotic shot. She never does it again unless she gets another infection. She has crystals in her urine. Just a thought. Except for her peeing I would never have known. Good luck!

It may be that the UTI wasn't completely cleared up and the cat needs to be on a longer course of antibiotics or perhaps a different kind of medication.  I have a feeling the cat is peeing out of the irritation from an infection that has not cleared up.
