Hi all,

You'd think in my entire life of having about 30 cats, I'd already know the answer to this one. Nope!

One of my kittens, Oscar, seemed particularly itchy and licky earlier in the week, and it lasted a couple of days. It was very reminiscent of those little "f" bombs (ie, fleas) but not exactly. I did check, and nada. None of the other critters are having this issue.

It seemed to get better yesterday. Coincidentally, it got damper outside too and less "wintry" the last couple days. I know I have been rather itchy myself the last few days, because I ALWAYS get that winter itch. Do cats get it too? I've never, ever had a cat get something like that before.

It was not like he was scratching his skin off. It was more like he would start scratching and licking only if he was standing still while contemplating jumping on his brother (for example).

Thanks!

Dry air can cause itchy skin in both people and animals. A humidifier will help add moisture to the air.

Man, I'm glad I live in North Carolina where low humidity is never an issue in any season.  In fact, if Hekitty naps for too long, I swear her whiskers start to mildew.

but aren't flea a big problem in more humid / warmer temps?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!  You said that WORD!  I just had to bomb the apartment...my landlady insisted on bombs...Got The Divine Ms. H. off of the useless Frontline and on Comfortis oral.  I could tell a difference within 2 hours.  And the hellish things is, fleas do not bite me.  Ever.  I sometimes don't know I really have an issue, other than Hekitty scratching (and she has allergies, scratching isn't always fleas), until some poor unsuspecting friend gets eaten half alive.

But to answer your question, why, yes.  They are.
