So my spayed cat is about 8 months old. She was a stray. We had her fixed just over a month ago. She was pregnant at the time of the spay, not far along we believe as the incision was very very small.

The last few weeks we have noticed a green discharge from her vagina. I have taken her to the vet and they were concerned of it being part of her uterus left over, since i had her spayed st the spca, but the vet did his exam and concluded that shouldn't be the case as she is healthy otherwise and wasn't showing signs of infection. He left off saying it could be her body clearing itself of a mild upper respiratory infection she had 2 weeks prior.

I've done some research that lochia is also a possibility as it can happen after they are pregnant. Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience with their cat? It seems the dischagre has become less frequent.but today I just saw it again. She tends to rub it onto the bed (very gross!!) Or licks it away. Anyone know what could be going on?! She's had no change in behaviour and recovered perfectly from her spay.

So confused!!

Thanks!

You are so right in being confused and concerned about your kitty. I would be too.

Green discharge is an indication of an infection. In fact, any colored discharge is concerning, from any area in the body; for humans too.

A respiratory infection does not cause any type of discharge from the vagina. If it is anything remaining of her uterus which is coming out, then it is very bad. In fact, I have not heard of that happening; but I am not a Vet.

If it were me, I would take her back to a different Vet or back to the where she was spayed. I am thinking she needs an antibiotic, at the very least.  I would not wait. Things could turn bad very fast. You do not want the infection entering her system.

I am wishing you luck with this situation

Obviously, it is bothering your kitty because she keeps licking it--I too would think that was gross, and wonder about how it would be for her to digest this junk.

It is best to catch an infection early, so there is not any huge complications in the future. I am thinking it may still be at a fairly early stage, but cats hide illness.

Please keep us updated...wishing you well..

((hugs))

Thank you so much!! We have an appointment to have her seen tomorrow. I've noticed all day today she's had green mucis just lingering at the opening of her vagina. Hoping it can be cured easily with some antibiotics!

We just took her to the vets, and they believe it is stump pyometrea! We have some antibiotics and the vet is confident it should clear up with the antibiotics!

Happy we got it sorted out!! Let's hope this works!!

I had to look that up. Sounds like the spay wasn't done completely.

That is a possibility as it was done at the SPCA and she was pregnant at the time so the vet did say there is always a greater risk of infection and pyometrea in that case. She is on 10 days of clavamox and the vet said that should easily do the trick.

So glad you did not delay in taking her to the Vets.

Pyometria is what I thought it was..It actually means a pus (infection) and discharge from the uterus, but since she was spayed, it could be from an infection above the vaginal cuff. Your kitty could have been a very sick cat if you delayed treatment.

It does not really matter how the infection came to be. What is important is that your cat is now receiving the proper care.

Do not stop giving the antibiotics until the prescription is empty. Do not stop it early or skip a dose.

If you still see green discharge after a few days of antibiotics, or if she is looking/acting poorly, please get right back to the Vet.

You are a good cat guardian/parent. I am also commending your parents for listening to you and not delaying in caring for your baby.

Thank you so much for taking such good care of her.

Please keep us updated and ask any and all questions when they come to mind.

Thank you so much! Yes I had suspected pyometria as well for sure. Glad it is at least open pyometria as I've read that is less severe and usually cured with just antibiotics. Our little girl is doing well otherwise, acting normal and eating and everything.

Thank you so much for the advice, my boyfriend and I were very worried as it had persisted for a while. I tend to be very paranoid as a whole ago I lost mine and my parents dog to epilepsy so I always try to keep informed about things when it comes to now mine and my boyfriends cat since things can happen so easily and severely in animals that we don't even realize it!

We love our little girl Scarlet!

Thank you very very much again! So nice to know there is a place to go with any questions or concerns!

Scarlett is a beautiful name! I am glad you gave us her name.

No need to thank me or anyone else here. It is really nice to hear, though.

We are all here for one purpose: to help people...and because we love our kitties and know how it feels to feel overwhelmed about situations...

I apologize if I got mixed up and mentioned your parents taking you to the Vets...Sometimes, I get a bit confused...

Thanks!! Here is our little girl! She was just meowing outside our condo one night and crazy enough my boyfriend and I had been thinking of getting a cat but weren't in a rush, but this little girl came to us. She was meowing on the 1st floor balcony below us looking up at me and when I went down to see her she just let me snuggle her and gave us kisses and stole our heart when she would put her paw on our hand whenever we were sitting down. It was just adorable! She found us![emoji]128571[/emoji][emoji]10084[/emoji]

how is Scarlett?
She is doing much better! Once she had been on antibiotics within a few days it cleared up! Also I may have been wrong about it pyometria. I believe it was actually a UTI as I kept a closer eye on her litterbox habits and noticed that she actually was peeing quite often and often times nothing would happen so I'm pretty sure she had a UTI instead. Either way the course of antibiotics would have been the same for either. She is doing well now though, and we've noticed she is back to being very very affectionate like usual. She was still affectionate before but not as much h as she usually would have been.

All is good, and thank you so much to everyone for the tips!! We love our little girl!![emoji]128571[/emoji]
