Hi, new here. Quick version of my story. Got a kitten 6 weeks ago from a rescue. Since then many symptoms eye discharge, bloody stool, loss of voice,
Most notable extreme lethargy, no playing, fever unresponsive to 3 rounds of meds. (Flagyl, clavamox, amoxicillin)
Now eyes have spots on outer layer, pupils unresponsive to light and iris slowly turning red.
Stool sample show no parasites and blood showed something off with globulin but nothing highly alarming otherwise.
Rescue thinks it's fip based on their experience and have basically told me it's a waiting it out now.
My questions are... Should I be looking for anything else? Any more testing or is it pointless? Is she in pain?! How long will this go on?
I'm doing my best to keep her comfortable and give her what she wants. She is still eating and sleeps with me but does not do anything else. Thank you

FIP is impossible to diagnose positively but there are signs that are highly indicative.  Blood test numbers are one of those signs.  An unresponsive fever is another.  Wet FIP will at some point include fluid buildup in the abdomen which is very obvious, the fluid usually has a distinctive yellowish cast to it.

Unfortunately there is no cure for FIP.  If that is what your kitten has she will decline very rapidly and the humane thing to do is to have her PTS.  I hate FIP.  There is nothing that can be done to prevent it and nothing that can be done to treat it.

I can't tell you if it's FIP. I lost a 7 month old kitten to suspected FIP and it was a relatively quick decline. Often with FIP their tummies will swell up like they're fat or pregnant but they're not. If it IS FIP then yes, nothing can really be done except to make them comfortable and choosing when the time is right to let them go. It might be worth getting a 2nd opinion from another vet.

For us, our girl got one thing after another and nothing would get any better. She came to us with diarrhea/giardia but no amount of antibiotics or sensitive stomach diets helped, it often had blood, she had ear mites that we treated for 4 weeks to no avail, she had ringworm that no amount of medication/baths/creams etc would fix, she started to pee on the floor as the litter box stressed her out. She was lethargic and quiet where a kitten should be full of energy. We just kept throwing medications and treatments at her and she just kept getting new things.

Thank you both. So the rescue did say they think it's the dry form of fip. I looked it up and know it's not promising but if it is dry form and if it is early enough is there anything that can be done? I read about ltci treatment is that worth any thought? It's like I go back and forth between accepting it and having peace and then wanting to try anything out there. Also I would like to know if anyone knows of this eye condition is painful?

The rescue also offered to take her back for "hospice" i told them I'd like to keep her here for now as she gets more one on one attention here. They said they were relieved with that decision. I have two kids who I'll have to explain this to. I guess also just knowing when is time. She's doesn't play or even lift her head when I walk in the room. But she does still eat and purr with me.

what a kind and compassionate thing to do, taking care and giving that little angel one on one attention and love. I pray that it is not FIP and that she makes a full recovery. If the poor little thing doesn't make it ,your love will ease her passing. Bless you and your family for being there for her.

thank you both. Would there be anything else I should try for her or try to rule out?

For sure it's not distemper? I ask because we had a kitten at the humane society pass away after similar symptoms. When they're that small they don't have a strong enough immune system to fight it off most times. Not that the odds of survival would be much better with distemper, but the fomites from that will survive for a long time in the environment and could affect your decision regarding adopting kittens in the future.

Hmm that's a good question to ask the vet. I read about it after you brought it up. She has had intermittent diareah with some blood but she has had no vomiting. She's also been sick for over 30 days which distemper looks like it runs pretty quick. The vet didn't mention her white blood cells. But I'm going to call again and mention this to rule out. We do plan on adopting again (rescue is giving us a new one) but will wait a little while. Also we have my other cat here... Who so far seems to be well.
I can't tell if she is in pain which is what bothers me. She seems ok for the most part but they tried to give her fluids at one point and they stopped because they said it's bothering her more than it should. maybe I should just pass up all that stuff from here on out and just keep her happy not stressed.

How are things going with her? I'm sorry, I don't have any further advice, we let our little girl go after we had her 7 weeks as she just kept getting new things go wrong and we couldn't fix any of the old (we never had an FIP diagnosis though, but our vet was pretty suspect).

Thanks so much for checking in. She had some more blood in stool and she started losing her balance. Her eating has slowed but she still is eating some (I'm feeding her mostly the cat food broth) I'm calling the vet today to try to get in to discuss any other possibilities or even just pain meds. I hope she's not in pain. I'm pretty sure her vision is going downhill as I can tell she can't see certain things and is now getting a little scared. However... She all of a sudden is more outgoing. I don't know if this is like an end burst of energy... I shouldn't call it energy by any means but she at least came out once to say hi. I'll let you know what the vet says. Thanks again.

The sweet girl was pts tonight. Purring and in my arms. It was very apparent it was time and it was peaceful. Thanks for all your support.

It breaks my heart when I hear about all the beautiful cats we are losing to this insidious illness.  I was praying it wasn't FIP. RIP sweet kitty
