Hello!
Joined this forum as I'm needing a bit of advice when it comes to my year old cat.
Millie is a year old tabby, she's indoor and we got her at roughly 8-12 weeks old from a previous owner who was a bit rough with her and wasn't sure how to deal with a kitten. Other than that her behavior was perfect, she cuddled up the first night and was a very friendly kitten. When she was 6 months old we got her a friend, a tiny 8 week old kitten who she took to straight away and treated her like her own kitten.
Before we got this kitten we had been told that a few times that we weren't in the house Millie had been a bit territorial and had been hissing at my partners brother while we weren't in, we took this as Millie just not being used to strangers as we were always with her and she's been lovely to us.
Just as a note, soon after we got Millie, she stopped purring and had never been the cuddliest of cats, not the type to sit on your knee but would happily let you pick her up and enjoy a quick hug.
The past few weeks have been an absolute nightmare with her though, walk past her and she'll hiss and swipe at your feet. Pick her up and she'll growl and meow to be let down, the only time she seems to be happy is at bed time where she'll sleep in her usual spot at the bottom of our bed with the younger cat.
Just a few notes about her, she has only just started going into heat, we were told by our vet to come back when she wasn't in heat but it's been constant and this is the first space of more than a few days where she's not been in heat and the vet is packed. Could it be the stress of being in heat?
She's still lovely with the younger cat, grooming, playing, sleeping together so I don't think it's a delayed territory thing that she's lashing out at us for.
I just really need your help, has anyone dealt with a cat that has just decided to take a disliking to everyone? What can I do to calm her?

Hi, and welcome to TCS :wavey:

Heat and raging hormones could definitely explain the behavioural changes in Millie. Try to just give her space for now. Don't pick her up if you don't have to - she may well have the feline equivalent of period pain, and there's no need to make her more uncomfortable that she already is.

Interactive playtime could really help her get her emotions in check - play is a great stress buster, and may help reduce her swiping at you when you go past. [article="0"][/article][article="0"][/article]

Hang in there. This will be a short term thing. Try and get her booked in for spaying as soon as is possible. Once that's done she should start to calm down again - though it will take a little while for her hormones to fully stabilise.[article="30316"][/article][article="30274"][/article][article="32758"][/article]
