I bought one of those collars from the local supermarket so I could cut the excess length off since she's so little and cat collars just don't fit. Anyway the collar went on, she freaked out pretty badly, I got bit getting it off. Pumpkin hates bells and apparently the hanging ID tag.

Do I try again after removing the bell (she's an inside cat only) or order a custom collar with her name and my number embroidered to avoid any hanging parts that might freak her out again?

Have you considered mircochiping ? My cat never use to wear a collar because she is inside only but she is mircochiped so i can't loss her.

You can buy tags that sit flush against the collar. Make sure the collars are breakway in case she catches it on something.

Microchips and collars together are a good strategy, especially in areas like mine. My cats are indoor cats and are microchipped and wear collars with ID tags. In my area, lots of people would never even think to check for a microchip, so the collars are sort of a first line defense. The microchips are back up for if the collars fall off and my cats happen to wind up at a shelter or something.

OP, have you considered getting a collar embroidered with your phone number on it? That way, you could eliminate the tag.

Microchipping is a great move, but it's best done on older kittens and adults. If a young kitten is microchipped, there's a high probability that the chip will move as the kitten grows. This doesn't cause any harm, brings a risk of the chip not being picked up on scanning if the cat did get lost.

Your vet can advise you of the best age to chip.

Collars are a good idea for all cats. However, if Pumpkin is really miserable in a collar then I wouldn't force the issue at this stage. She may be more accepting later on...when she's big enough for a different style of collar.

Pumpkin will be microchipped but not a lot of people here would bother checking.
I'm looking for a nice embroidered collar however she just wore her old one with minimal fuss (after we ripped the bell off) until my boyfriend took it off because "she looks too small to wear one" -_-

Have you tried looking for a kitten collar online? My kitten was far to small to wear any cat collar when we got her. At 8 months old a few weeks ago, we finally switched her to an adult collar.

I've been looking for a kitten size embroidered collar but since she didn't mind her tag, I'll look into it. Thanks.

Just make sure that it is a break-away collar.  Cats and kittens have strangled on collars that became hung on something.  No sense in taking chances when the solution is so readily available.  And even though your kitten is indoor, I'd go with collar and chip, as well.  You'd be shocked at how quickly the little demons can slip out a door!

Yeah one of my housemate's guests let her outside while I was a
at work. Absolutely paranoid about her safety now.

That'll do it.  My water heater exploded while I was at work awhile back, and by the time my neighbor came to get me, the fire department, the police, the complex maintenance man and half the danged town was in my apartment.  The only one not in there was the cat.  Luckily, she had run up the stairs next door, and in the apartment in the same position as mine.  Pretty smart for a panicked kitty, but I decided then and there that a good collar with tags and a microchip was at the top of the "to-do" list!
