Bro lost his brother Peebo in the dog attack over 22 days ago and still looks for him outside...

Bro has never wanted to stay inside in winter in the house at night.

he would wake me up  at 2 am and meow till I let him out the rest of the night then come inside at daybreak and sleep during the day in side our home..

The other two male cats were content to spend the night inside the house

where as Bro was not..

Now I am dealing with Bro's grief and we are not getting any sleep

from his yelling of a meow.non stop for 10 minutes at at time and last night

I counted ll times he did this ..episodes..

The new kitten Lily we got last week has to be bothered inside with us and Bro making all this meowing loudly and scratching on doors..inside

he does not stop if you let him sleep with us..for a while he will but then he gets down off the bed an starts pacing and meowing to go outside all night long..

Any suggestions? I do not want him to cause this new shelter rescue kitten 6 months old Lily to have anxiety...we have had her less than a week...in our home ...inside..

She is in a  very large open wire dog carrier at night with her bed and litter box

of her own in the living room and we let her out during the day when we

are in the house with her

or with she and Bro the 8 year old male

neutered cat..that crys all the time..and likes to be outside...

I have a collar coming ..different brand for calming I hope that works on Bro...

Any thoughts?

:hugs: I'm so sorry you're going through this. Bro is clearly deep on mourning for Peebo, as I'm sure you are too. Time will be the biggest healer, but Bro clearly needs some help managing his emotions at the moment.

The calming collar is a great idea. Feliway is another option too, though it's possible neither of these will be enough just at the moment. I've had great success using flower essences in these kinds of situations. Spirit Essences are the most accessible, but a custom Bach Flower Remedies blend would also be a good option. You might want to consider trying Composure too. This level of stress isn't good for any of you.

I really hope Bro starts coping better soon. :hugs: :vibes:

thank you so much

would you believe that my husband and I had vertigo after putting the new calming collar on bro for one night?

It is odd that would happen as we never have vertigo..dizziness and I was walking into the walls a few times sideways...that night..

I wonder if it affected us it had to..

I will let you know after we use the calming collar a few more nights..

Bro did get near me with it on ..and near larry to sit near us that night

and the dizziness started the next morning with my husband and the next day with me..

I think that Bro was an outside cat and he loved the nights out there

the hated being inside on winter nights with even having his two brother cats

with him and a wide open house to enjoy

He still looks for Bro almost a month later now...outside.

I had heard to show the deceased pet to the other pets and I wish I had done so..I was crying so  hard as they dug a hole to bury peebo here at our home

that I forgot to show Bro that Peebo was not alive and being buried in a box

and pillow case that day right before dark..

Also Bro saw the mauling and the crying before we got home and he had hid in the woods to save his own life...

Thank you ..I am worn down ...and my husband...I am sure the new kitten Lily is tired of the nightly ritual of crying all night long by Bro..in the house..

Hi Sheri, It sounds strange that the collar would have that effect on you guys. I don't think it has anything chemical in it, does it? I know you wouldn't have gotten it if it did. I'm pretty sure there are just calming pheromones, & maybe lavender?  Do you guys have gas heat or stove in the house? Please check them if you do, If so, you should have a carbon monoxide detector as well. I'm sure you do if you have gas anything. Could be something as simple as a burner light out, & you are feeling it. I caught that in an older couples house I clean for. I noticed a gas smell when I was cleaning the stove, but couldn't see anything. They had someone come out, & a pilot light was out on one of the burners, so they thanked me for bringing that to their attention.

I will keep Bro in my prayers. Have you tried talking to him while he is calm, & just telling him Peebo is gone for now, but he will see him again one day.  I think they understand more than we think, & may surprise you.  Just thinking as an alternative to an animal communicator talking to him......  They say animals communicate w/ pictures, or visions, so maybe picture what you are telling him while you talk to him. Pray for guidance & assistance before.

Hi Kelley

we do not have gas..thanks for mentioned the gas heat as that can kill a  person with a leak

since we have central heat and cool elec that is not what caused the dizziness

it is gone now and the collar has been in a ziploc for 24 hours..so it could be that

for us being fragrance which has chemicals in it..perfume, cologne, lysol

and so many products that have formyaldehyde or toulane perfumes and colognes

any thing could have made us sick ...being around others or their homes..

Will try the collar and see ...what happens again the next few nights..

tonight is warm and we are locking Bro out on the porch in a huge dog open crate

cover it up with sheets totally and give us one nights break..hopefully...

He loves the out side at night...I realize if something came up on the porch he could harm himself

inside the cage trapped ..wanting to get out and run..so we are hesitant to put him out there

locked in a xlarge dog crate with sheets all over the open areas..to hide inside..and big fleece blanket inside

He does fine in the daytime in this carrier...huge one

but we are inside and able to hear if something comes up on the porch after him now..

I hope it settles down sometime as we are on each others nerves...in this house..

Lily is fine and loving but she can not enjoy the stress from Bro all night crying loudly...

She has adjusted to us and was social today with family from out of state and this is her

8th day here since we adopted her from the shelter...

They did not reveal that she had upper respiratory illness as a kitten and I found out she was pre adopted when I called in the micro chip number after I got home...They have on her papers she has had all shots in august was born May 31st

so she will be 6 months nov 30

I was upset to find this out..as that infection can kill a cat...and has one of mine that was boarded near one who had it

years ago and my cat had not been vaccinated for the upper resp disease.

do you think it will come back on Lily in the future?

So sorry for the loss of your other kitty, it's sounds traumatic for everyone involved. It sounds like you are doing everything you can to make the transition easier.

In regards to the shelter not disclosing "respiratory illness", I guess I would want to know more about what exactly this means. Did she have sniffles, a sneeze, discharge or significant wheezing and distress that could have caused permanent lung damage. There is a huge range of possibilities from very minor to very severe. I think most times documentation is fairly vague and doesn't exactly give a good idea of really what happened. Maybe if you call you cant get more information. BTW, she is a cutie!!!!

I'm glad it's not gas. That's a relief. As far as Bro, I'd leave one side of the sheet raised at least half way, so he can see out, so he doesn't freak out, not being able to see, or see if anything is out there & could warn you guys ahead of time with meowing. Poor thing, I think he's just been through so, so much in his little world, in such a short time frame. It's a lot for him.

As far as Lily, If she had respiratory issues in the past, she probably has feline herpes, which is very common in cats. You should start her on lysine for maintenance. This way, she should stay good, unless triggered by stress, etc.. That's why Angel gets it every day. Luckily, he has never had respiratory issues, but he did have to have Rx eye drops off & on every few months for his first 2 yrs. with me. I knew when a "flair up" was happening when his "third eye" started showing a lot more, & pinkish.

For Lily w/ past respiratory issues,, she may start sneezing a lot, have discharge, etc.. so just stay aware of that.  Angel has been on lysine daily since the first yr.  he has been with me, & the vet told me about it. (You will find many threads on here about it too.)   The dosage is 250 mg. 2XS/day because they pee it out, it's given 2XS/day.  IF there is a flare up happening, you double the dosage to a full 500 mg. 2XS/day until better. I have done this for years with Angel & he has done very well. The least expensive place I have found lysine is on amazon.com. It usually comes in 500 mg. capsules, so I just open one & sprinkle half in his breakfast, & the other half in his dinner.

Easy!  The "now" brand is good & has great prices. I think I have gotten a big 120 caps for about $12.00.

Also, let me know if you want me to send you those calming treats to try for Bro. I think they are too much for Angels tummy. He has thrown up when I tried a full dose for his weight, (15 lbs) so one & 1/2. he did OK with one, but doesn't really need them, so I have almost a full bag I can send you if yo want. They are just

L-tryptohan, chamomile, & ginger. (i think the ginger was too much for Angel). So I'd maybe try just one to start with as well. (1 treat per 10 lbs)

Just pm me w/ your address if you want them. I'll be glad to send them.

I really wouldn't recommend starting on lysine without talking to a vet. There us now significant doubt as to how effective it is [thread="309898"][/thread]
