We don't know how old Franny is - she has been with us for just over five years and we think in hindsight that she was about 5 at the time (she was said to be younger, but it was probably that she was small). She was diagnosed with small cell lymphoma last December (on top of kidney and thyroid problems) and they gave her a year. Recently the chaemo wasn't working and we switched to a different one at the beginning of the month. We had hoped that it would give her another six or twelve months of happy life before the inevitable.

Sadly, it wasn't to be. She was hospitalised a fortnight ago and rehydrated on an IV for a few days before coming home. Then she picked up an infection and was given some antibiotics last week. That seemed to be the tipping point for her and she pretty much stopped eating last week. She was back in hospital at the weekend and we were told yesterday to bring her home for the night for the last time.

We had a great evening, and it almost looked like she was rallying, but it was pretty clear she knew her time was up. She slept in our room and we woke up in the early hours of this morning to a strange sound. We gave her a stroke and that was it, we had got to her just as she passed (for which we were really glad).

We had been expecting it for a while now, but it doesn't make it any easier ...

Thank you - it is horrible, and you're haunted by thoughts of what you could have differently, but we know in our hearts we did everything we could. She did so much for us over the years, it is so hard to say goodbye. And yes, cancer is the worst!

I'm happy your sweet Franny died at home with the ones she loved most in this world by her side, I'm sure she was comforted greatly with your presence. It sounds like you did what you could to help her, she knew this and loved you all the more for your care and devotion. I hope you can find comfort in past memories of happier times, and in the fact that you loved her, which is all she ever wanted. She will always reside in that special place in your heart, she'll never be far for as long as you live, the bond you shared is something that even death will never break. RIP sweet Franny, you will never be forgotten!

My condolences on your loss of Franny. Our fur babies always leave us far too soon. I'm sure she was comforted by your presence and her familiar surroundings at the end. RIP, Franny. :rbheart:
