We don't know how old Franny is - she has been with us for just over five years and we think in hindsight that she was about 5 at the time (she was said to be younger, but it was probably that she was small). She was diagnosed with small cell lymphoma last December (on top of kidney and thyroid problems) and they gave her a year. Recently the chaemo wasn't working and we switched to a different one at the beginning of the month. We had hoped that it would give her another six or twelve months of happy life before the inevitable.
Sadly, it wasn't to be. She was hospitalised a fortnight ago and rehydrated on an IV for a few days before coming home. Then she picked up an infection and was given some antibiotics last week. That seemed to be the tipping point for her and she pretty much stopped eating last week. She was back in hospital at the weekend and we were told yesterday to bring her home for the night for the last time.
We had a great evening, and it almost looked like she was rallying, but it was pretty clear she knew her time was up. She slept in our room and we woke up in the early hours of this morning to a strange sound. We gave her a stroke and that was it, we had got to her just as she passed (for which we were really glad).
We had been expecting it for a while now, but it doesn't make it any easier ...
