Hello fellow TCS members. My name is Glory and I'm fairly new here. I love learning new things especially about animals. And most of all, about cats. As they are my absolute passion.

My husband and I recently rescued a 5 week old kitten. She's now almost 12 weeks. Very healthy, vaccinated, all de worming treatments, fleas, ear mites....the whole 9!!! Only thing left to do is spay her when she's old enough.

My question is regarding her feed. She's currently on dry kitten chow. And a little wet (kitten)every now and then. I actually had to bottle feed her KMR when I first found her. She was pitiful. Anywho, she's thriving wonderfully. I just am not sure when it's safe to switch her over to adult. I want her to get every bit of what she needs in her kitten feed so that she maintains a healthy lifestyle.

Any suggestions on this? What age should I change her over? Should I slowly introduce her when I do? Or just completely change over? (She still has her baby k-9's). Any advice or opinions are greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance for your knowledge and time.

Kitten food is fed for the first year.  Some people begin switching them over around 8 months.  I think it will depend on her size and breed.  I know the breed is a guessing game but some breeds continue growing after the first year.

Hi there! Thanks for your response and advice. Ok so she's a DSH tortishell. She weighed 2.23 il see at 8 weeks. She's almost 12 weeks now. She's thin, but healthy. Kinda lanky so far because she's growing fast! I cannot believe how big she is considering when I found her(at a food lion grocery store) she fit in the palm of my hand. (That was at 5 weeks of age). So what's the deal with the breed and size? (I'm pretty sure I understand, just wanted details) I know my Maine Coon continued to grow after a year.

Small cat stop growing sooner and may not need all the extra fat in the kitten food.  You can judge by her size and transition her sooner than a year or just aim for a year.

I had a foster kitten who was about 7 lbs when we got her and she was small, about the size of a 6 month old kitten.  She was almost a year.  Since she had nursed her last kittens the day I got her and she was on the thin side, I continued to give her kitten food.  I transitioned her after she put on a pound or so and when my cats began to eat her food.  Swapping places and all.

Usually it's recommended to feed kitten food until about a year.  You can start transitioning a bit earlier though and it isn't an issue.  My boy is 7 months old and I feed him kitten dry that I leave out all day, and wet morning and evening, I sometimes feed kitten wet and sometimes adult wet...he is more picky when it comes to wet!  You could start adding more wet as it is much better for them than dry :)  She can also be spayed quite soon, at my clinic we usually recommend they be at least 3 lbs which is usually around 12 weeks.  :)

Thank you both for all of the information!!! I greatly appreciate it. Ok another thing.....I didn't know you could spay so young......wow I was under the impression it was more like 6 months. But definitely before her first heat!

I also would recommend waiting until she is about a year before you transition her. I have an almost 8 month old and a 14 year old. My kitten is one who thinks he has to eat every food item in sight, so he gets adult dry food too since my 14 year old is a free fed cat and doesn't swat at him when he's eating her food. With that being said, I am not actually going to transition him to adult food until he hits 11 months to 12 months marker (plus my 14 year old enjoys eating his kitten food! XD).
