An emaciated adult cat (maybe a year old) was in my yard earlier just crying out. I went out on the porch and called him and he came over - I couldn't believe how thin he was. I went inside and got him a 3 oz can of cat food and some water and took it out to the porch, where he gobbled the food up. I eventually got him into the garage where we made up a makeshift place to sleep and prepared the spare litter box. I just gave him dinner. He is very friendly, very used to people and apparently healthy. My first strategy will be trying to hand him off to a rescue organization. We like the cat but we already have two cats that both were rescues. I already know about the quarantine period and a medical exam before he can have contact with our indoor-only cats. I'm hoping to avoid the expense of the exam and I also would like to see him stabilized before even going to the vet. For example, I'd like to see him filling out a little and normal elimination taking place. I haven't actually seen him drink yet and there's been no litterbox activity.
My guess is somebody dropped off the cat or moved away and left him. Honestly, I think you should have to be licensed to have responsibility for animals.
