My cat Bella is around a year old. She's an indoor only cat. She has not been fixed. I believe she is a domestic shorthair. I rescued her off a local swap page. She scratches a lot on her head and neck, so much that she's made sores. She has been topically treated for fleas. On her sides right above her thighs, the hair has thinned down to barely there. She has the same thing in her front arm pits and they are red. The rest of her fur is fine and she has no other issues besides the above mentioned. What could be going on with her? She seems to itch a lot all the time.

We have 2 other cats Nikki and Brie, both female, sister calicoes, indoor only, not fixed. The one sister, Brie, has no issues. The other, Nikki, has bald patches on her belly, thigh and bottom lip. She doesn't seem to itch bad like Bella. Her hair was growing back and now it seems to be balding in random areas again.

Neither one seem to be in pain with their conditions. I'm thinking dry skin or food allergy. Has anyone had experience with this? Please help!!

Is there a reason that you haven't fixed them? I wonder if these symptoms could be stress related?

First of all, they need to get to the vet for a check up to make sure they don't have anything illness wise going on.  After that, it could be a flea allergy, food allergy, or litter allergy.  Have you changed their food or litter recently?

Lastly, they do need to be spayed.  Not only can they get pregnant with unwanted litters, they are more susceptible to develop pyometra, which can be a fatal infection in the uterus.

Do they have open wounds? These can be symptoms of ringworm or mange or mites. It seems odd to me that you have 2 of your 3 cats who are losing fur and symptoms can be different in different cats or one may have a worse problem than the other.

If you get that checked and ruled out by a vet then yes, it sounds allergy related. I have a 2 year old Maine Coon who started scratching around a year of age. Then he started licking and yes, he gets little scabs when things are bad, he gets hot spots and he overgrooms when itchy, making the fur come out and bald spots appear. The skin underneath is frequently bright pink and red.

If she's horribly uncomfortable a short course of cortisone will calm it down and you can start to work out what is making her itchy.

Our vet had us rule out fleas by doing fortnightly spot on flea treatments for 3 months instead of monthly.

We also trialed antihistamines, wiping down his fur daily, spraying with qv oil and water to keep him moisturized and we're currently facing a full elimination diet as removing fish and soy from his diet hasn't helped either.

Flea allergy is most common, closely followed by food.

It could be contact allergy from litter but my vet seems to think that is the least likely cause and would tend to cause itching that was more localized to the underneath of him rather than all over.

Definitely take her to a vet though, sometimes it's an easy fix.
