Nutro ingredients? Where from?

Hi All,

This site has helped me so much - it's been invaluable and I appreciate all of you!

Does anyone know where Nutro sources it's ingredients from? I'm having a hell of a time with my kittens and their food. One cat eats Tiki exclusively - though lately she's getting bored, and some days won't eat it at all.  My other guy is extremely picky. I think I've tried 13 different foods. He ate a pea sized amount of the Nutro Naturals sliced turkey, as well as the kitten soft loaf chicken. Which I'm happy about - I know the food isn't perfect but he needs to eat something!

I've emailed them to find out where they source their ingredients (I'm praying it's not China) - and haven't heard back yet.

Is anyone able to confirm anything?

Thanks so much!

I don't know, but I feed quite a bit to both my cats and my fosters. I like that its not loaded with veggies. I'd be kind of surprised if they were sourcing chicken and turkey from China.

Thanks guys.

I also like that it's not loaded with veggies (& carbs). It checks off a few other boxes on my list, too. :-)

And, yeah, I checked their website & googled, but couldn't find a source for the meat. Hopefully they'll get back to me sometime soon & then I'll report back.

Until then, anyone else know? One of the reasons I'm asking is because I don't want to continue to go through the hassle of switching them over, have them get used to it & then have to (possibly) find another food. It's been quite daunting, to say the least. And by daunting I mean I want to pull every hair out of my head & bang it against the wall.

Oh & I actually only by grain free - so no rice here :-D

Please update us on what they tell you. I feed it quite a bit so I'm interested in their reply.

Good luck with trying to get a response from Nutro as far as their entire ingredient sourcing. While they may provide a few sources, as LTS3 mentioned, it's doubtful they'll reveal all their sourcing.

There are a handful of pet food manufacturers who offer transparency of their ingredient sourcing to customers, some have signed a "pledge" via Truth About Pet Food, however, they are the exception and not the norm.

It seems you're right, LisaMarie. Here is the response I received - keep in mind I specifically singled out the turkey & chicken.....which wasn't addressed.

Thank you for contacting us. We appreciate you choosing our products.

At The Nutro Company, every ingredient in our products is carefully selected for the health and well being of dogs and cats. Many of our ingredients are sourced in North America, but we also secure some ingredients outside of North America including Green Lipped Mussel which is indigenous to New Zealand and vitamins and minerals, many of which are also purchased from China similar to most other pet food manufacturers.

Rest assured we are confident in our suppliers for these essential materials and the exhaustive selection process to qualify them as a Mars, Inc. vendor. The basis for this confidence stems from our commitment to only work with suppliers that have demonstrated the ability to consistently meet our standards and specifications and are committed to values of conduct that are compatible with our own. We require all of our suppliers to sign and meet the expectations in our Supplier Code of Conduct in order to provide consistent excellence for our consumers and stakeholders. The Code sets globally consistent criteria for selecting and assessing the companies from whom we source raw ingredients and packaging, regardless of origin.

The Nutro Company is committed to developing quality products which meet your pet's nutritional needs. Your confidence in our products and continued goodwill are very important to us. Please give us a call at 1-800-833-5330  , Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Central Standard time if you would like additional information.
I hope you have a great day.
Sincerely,

That's unfortunate 9Flowers, but predictable - they gave you very general, non-specific information.

Compare the response you received from Nutro to e.g., Bravo, which just came out with a new line of canned food for cats; below the "ingredients" tab, there is a country of origin link for all the ingredients, including the vitamins:

http://www.bravopetfoods.com/cat_canned_dinners_duck_turkey_liver.html

Well at least you received a response - I didn't think you'd even get that.

Those new Bravo foods look really good, but super pricy on Chewy in comparison to Nutro.

Oh sure, Bravo definitely is more expensive than Nutro but the point is that Bravo is offering customers transparency of their ingredient sourcing.

I think it's great they're being transparent and I'm hoping to get some cans of their new food to try out. I feed Nutro in my rotation as a 'mid range' food because I also feed a lot of higher end foods and raw so i needed something more affordable to balance it out as I have a lot of cats right now. I don't really consider Nutro to be a higher end pet food, though. I more consider them mid-range, where lower end would be grocery store brands. I don't really expect mid to low end companies to be that transparent about their sources, but I do think its nice they at least responded to the original email rather than just ignore it completely.

Definitely, I understand cost effectiveness, especially when you have a lot of cats to feed. I like that Nutro's Natural Choice is low carb, I've fed it myself in the past to my two kitties and will again, if I need to.  Wouldn't it be nice though if that transparency Bravo is offering (and a handful of other companies) were not limited to just the higher end foods - that we would only expect transparency based on higher price points?  Pet parents deserve to know that information regardless of the price they are able to pay, imo.

Likely most people don't  give origin sourcing a second thought, however, that the info would be available for those who are interested, from all pet food manufacturers, not just high end ones. :)

Nutro Natural Choice is around a dollar or so a can for a small can. Bravo canned comes out to be about the same for a 5.5 Oz can is around $2 on Chewy. The one with duck is more expensive. I may give it a try. Thanks for posting

That's a good point, i forgot that the Bravo was a 5.5 oz and Nutro was a 3oz. I'm probably going to phase out Nutro since my kittens are getting older and not eating as much. I've been looking for a food with a good amount of calories but my guys don't like the NV LI and are mostly meh about Merrick's LI, so I'm hopeful that perhaps Bravo will be a hit. I might just bite the bullet and get a case on Chewy rather than wait for stores around here to carry it.

I wonder if Bravo would send samples. I might look into it.

Here's what their website says about their new canned foods

Do you have samples (coupons) of this product my dog/cat can try?

We do not currently have product samples available, but we will be offering subscribers to our eNewsletter a coupon for these products. If you haven't done so already, we suggest you sign up for the eNewsletter on the home page of our website to receive special offers on Bravo products.

I had sent another email once again specifically asking about the chicken & turkey & I got another response:

Thanks again for contacting us. I apologize for the delay in my reply.

All of the Chicken and Turkey used in our NUTRO[emoji]174[/emoji] pet food is sourced here in the United States.

I hope this is helpful. If you have additional questions or comments, feel free to give us a call at 1-800-833-5330, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Central time.

Have a great day!

Pretty good, huh?  Thanks for the link to Bravo. I wish all companies were that transparent.

Funny enough, my kitten stopped eating the Nutro. Conveniently after I purchased a case of 24
. I've been able to sneak it in with Pride's Rockstar Rabbit for Clive & it melts right into the liquid of the Tiki Carnivore for Penelope, so I've been slowly using it. If I put too much though, those little kitties know it & won't finish.

I'm still searching for carageenen, grain, & menadione free food (that they will actually eat). I might try Bravo.

That's great, thanks for the info! Mine stopped liking the Nutro Kitten but still like the sliced Turkey (for now lol).
