I am hoping someone has seen this before...I have a Persian that has been making a mouth action like she has fur caught in her mouth. When i go to swipe fur away there is never any fur there. I took her to the vet a week ago where she was diagnosed with an ear infection.  I have been putting drops in her ears since then but this mouth action persists. She has not lost weight, using the litter box normally. She is sleeping a lot and doesn't want to play much. She isn't as social either. Something is up and even the vet couldn't figure it out, except for the ear infection.  Originally thought it was a tooth because she had an abscess tooth a few years back and the vet pulled it out and she was back to normal self. This vet didn't see anything wrong with her teeth, although, no x-ray has been done. (can only imagine what that will cost)  I would greatly appreciate any advice, ideas or input anyone has....I am stumped.

Lip smacking is a typical sign of nausea. Did the vet do any bloodwork? If not, make an appointment to have it done. The bloodwork will show if your cat has any underlying medical issue that may be causing nausa, such as pancreatitis. The pancreatitis test is the fLP if you want t make sure the vet includes it with the general bloodwork.

Many vets don't know what the signs of dental issues are (dental health isn't really taugh in vet school) so if you want to make sure there isn't any dental issue, take your cat to a veterinary dental specialist.

Thanks for that input. The vet was going to do blood work and when the ear infection was found, we decided against it for now. ugh, wish i would have done it anyway.  The one thing that still makes me wonder about a tooth is that she only does it when she is grooming or when you hit that 'spot', like scratching a dog and his leg wiggles. A veterinary dentist was also brought up at that last appointment. Got some calling to do...  Thank you again

When my cats go in for a dental, the cost for sedation, blood testing (my vet recommends before every operation) and full mouth x-rays costs me about $300 total. I'm sure it varies, but at least that'll give you an idea. Cleaning and extractions can cost several hundred more, depending on how bad it is.

I would have started with the ear infection as well- get the obvious and easiest out of the way and see what that does.

Thanks again for the helpful input. I took her too a different vet today that is 'cats only'. I found that they do dentistry.  The conclusion, she has a swollen tongue and it is probably Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC).  Opted not to do a biopsy. The whole process was more than my pocket could afford. Its not curable and can be aggressive.  She gave her a shot of steroids and a long lasting antibiotic and I will take  her back in 10 days and ...well.. go from there. Make her comfortable until we can't make her comfortable.

And to think, I thought it was just a tooth..
