I want to buy a space heater for my home. I just need to it heat up the space where I work. Jed tends to leave most things alone, but since it's so nice and warm he'll probably want to hang out near it. Is there anything else I can do to make sure he's safe? The unit would obviously be unplugged every time I leave or go to bed and stowed in the closet. It'll always be within sight when plugged in.

We have one like this in the cat room for chilly nights:
Ours doesn't have an automatic shut off like the one in the link but we keep it on low and it never gets too hot to the touch.

I'd make sure the space heater goes off automatically if tipped over, or that it is sturdy enough not to tip over.  Other than that, you'll probably be ok.  Cats are pretty canny when it comes to hot stuff, and if their canny fails, they learn fast.  I fretted like crazy the first winter I had Hekitty, because my only source of heat was a kerosene heater (hard times...living in a garage...and not a finished garage), but she very quickly figured out the best distance for "warm but not singing meh fur."  She did have an unfortunate incident with a candle, and got her whiskers singed, but it only took once...the heat the candle put out wasn't strong enough to warn her off.

I bought a ceramic heater... found it in Target for $25. Best of all, it has CoolTouch technology -- in other words, the casing is not hot at all. Very kitty-safe. :bigthumb:

Kitty unfortunately is terrified of this new, strange, oscillating machine. Twice he tried to check it out, but he bolted off as soon as the machine makes the clicking sound when it reaches the end of its oscillating arc. The third time, I lured him near it with treats, but he ran away once he got into its warm zone.

Silly cat. :lol3:

Would an oil-filled radiator work for you? I have one and it seems pretty cat safe. The one I have has timers on it so there's no turning on or off manually unless I want to. It can be timed to turn on in 30 minute increments, which is incredibly helpful at keeping a chill away while greatly decreasing worry.
