Hello, Happy Saturday.

If you had the time and money to redecorate your house, what would you do?

I'd really like to change the look of our 2nd floor. Our house is made of wood and has nice wood panelling downstairs. Upstairs it has this wall paper that is supposed to look like wood, but it's been up there for ages and it's peeling in places. It's also been thoroughly clawed in a few spots.

I'd really like to strip all the paper off and paint the wood in that "distressed" look paint. It's going to be distressed soon enough with this many cats in the house, so we may as well start off looking that way.

I'd also like some more built in cupboards down stairs. We don't have enough storage space, a few more cupboards would be really handy.

Oh, and a wood stove! I'd love a wood stove. We'd need to put a chimney in and replace the wooden flooring with stone, but that wouldn't be too hard. A wood stove would be so nice and cosy in the winter.

How about you, what would you do?

What I would love to do is put some tile floors down in both bathrooms. My house was built in 2002. I have Congoleum vinyl in my kitchen area, laundry room, office and the little entryway that comes in from the garage. I have never liked the flooring, It was sold to me as no wax, but that simply is not so. It looks awful if I don't wax it. It is a satin finish floor, so I have to make sure I get the right kind of wax. I am too old to deal with waxing floors, even in a one in a while basis. I want new flooring there. When we built the house, we painted everything in antique white. I would really love to paint some colors on the walls. Other than that, I am good. I still have my original appliances and as long as they work, I am good.

I would add here that I would like to redo our steps to the upstairs room. I would like to tear them out and make them oak.

I would like to be able to start work on the addition....now. Add the garage with the living room, turn the old living room into a dining room, get the table out of the kitchen and install the baking island. That way, I would have All Things Baking in one place. And I would have plenty of room for rolling out all the dough I wanted.
That's the one thing in my kitchen that I really want and did not get....a place for baking.

Construct the front porch and put in a new front door.

Finish the basement. We started it, but didn't get very far. I could really use more storage space.

The problem is that our house is about 30 years old now. Our son's old bedroom is now the computer and it's updated. The bedroom reno is in progress. The kitchen reno is fairly well done (ABB - All But Backsplash), other than adding the new living room, etc. As soon as the bedroom is finished, Rick wants to start in on our bathroom, which is still the original bathroom. It needs a major update....new everything. He's already talked to our electrician about a heated bathroom floor and they can do it. But we have to finish the bedroom first.

Maybe paint the walls. They're a typical off-white color and kind of blah. And I'd redo the hardwood floor. The installer I used didn't do a great job. I have noticeable gaps between the floor board in a few mostly out of the way spots, a great magnet for litter and cat hair
I was in a rush to move in (the floor was finished the day of the furniture arrival) or I would have demanded the installer fix those gaps.

I'd strip the wallpaper upstairs, it's an old wallpaper of antique flowers.

I'd make the stairs on the outside porch safe so my cats don't fall through it... (again)

I'd also like to make an extension to the rooms, they're tiny!

Change the curtains! They look really old like my grandmas' house.

I guess everything, really....

Definitely a new paint job, and new flooring in the kitchen.  Pretty mundane stuff.

We need new floors and paint in the downstairs office and laundry. We are going to pick out the floors and paint over the holidays, and also a new sink and vanity for the bathroom (there's also a little bathroom down there). The offices have yucky old carpet and the laundry has painted plywood floors and 60's wood panelling, so it really needs updating. Should make for some good before and after photos.

Um...EVERYTHING!

No, I tell a lie. The upstairs bathrooms are fine ;)

Apart from that - new floors, repaint throughout, repair cracks in the walls, replace windows (some of the frames have seen better days), DEFINITELY new kitchen, extension leading onto the garden, cat proof the garden to be one big catio, maybe knock down a structural wall downstairs to extend the kitchen (its tiny), new cloakroom downstairs, find some way to get the washer and dryer into the main house (they're currently it's the garage -a separate building), redo the office to make room for my jewellery stuff, um...I'm sure there are things I've missed, but that's what springs to mind... :thud:

If you had the time and money to redecorate your house, what would you do?

I would BUILD a house!!! Seriously, I rent!!!

If I had the ability to rehab this apartment, I would go hog-wild!

Paint!!! so sick of white walls..yes only color allowed. Unless you re-paint it whit upon leaving!!

New kitchen cabinets and floors. New appliances in stainless.

New windows and patio doors

replace carpet in both bedrooms. or maybe just one and put laminate in the other. (not really needing to be done)

Update bathrooms...

It sounds as if I live in a dump, but it is really a nice apartment; just dated...it needs some renovations. They are slowly getting around to it.

Oh boy.  I could write you a book.  My degree is in Interior Design; so this is something I think about too often.  I'm always dreaming up things I'll probably never do.  And that might be ok because those dreams change over time.

I'd start by adding an addition off my kitchen dining area.  I need a room that is for ME.  Except I also need a school room.
The room would have a gas fireplace (we already have a wood stove in the living room) flanked by 3' bookshelves that have square windows over them.  The fireplace would be finished in river rock from floor to ceiling.
I'd have my desk in there and 2 comfy, reclining arm chairs.  I don't really want a sofa in there; but a sleeper sofa in a room like that would make a nice guest room.  I'm out of places to put guests.  The room would have glass doors leading to the patio outside; so plenty of light.  I'd also love a covered patio; somewhere you can sit to watch the rain.

I'd redo the floors in the main areas of the house to a nice medium stain wood wood.  Heated tile floors in the kitchen and bathrooms.  I'd add crown molding throughout the house and some built ins for storage, display and books.

I'd probably change the carpet in the bedrooms to something more attractive, less stain showing and more comfortable to sit on.  The foyer, hallway and bathrooms would get painted.  I'd also add recessed lighting in every room possible.  The lighting is so much nicer and even.  Plus it's adjustable.  Kids and cats have knocked over the floor lamps too many times.

In my master bedroom I'd add weathered wood wainscoting to one wall with a light sea blue damask wallpaper on top.  Crown molding would be put in.  Accents would be done in mercury glass and aged bronze.  The furniture would be a medium to dark stain wood and coordinated pieces (instead of pieces we have collected since childhood!
).

Can I just move instead? It would be a lot less effort :lol3:
 :yeah: ...except that getting this house in a state to sell would be almost as much work as all the 'ideal' remodeling/renovations

(I hasten to add - its not a dump, just an old building. Things like roof maintenance have to take precedence over more cosmetic work! )

Too much to list. I've mentioned before that I live in a house built in 1925. Guy before neglected it for 30 years.  It's not in awful shape but it isn't in great shape either.  I've spent a ton of money already and it is nowhere near being finished.  I'm hoping this year to replace the front and living room doors (there's a port cochere, so a door leading to side yard from living room).  Might finally get around to replacing the front walkway (it's original, brick and sinking).  Would love to find a backsplash already too.  Some minor electrical and carpentry repairs.  And that's just this year.  The big job is the main bathroom which is utterly disgusting but in working condition. I'm pushing that one off as long as possible; it needs to be gutted completely.

I have no idea what possessed me to purchase the house.  Oh yea. I love it, in spite of all it's woes.

I am about to put up new set of shelves in my bedroom which I will also be using as an "office" (kind of) in the near future.. I already have a set of shelves I am currently using, but they look pretty damn good for transforming them into a kind of scratch/play/sleep tower for Grizzly..

Regarding the rest of the appartment, definitely paint job, new curtains and new covers for the furniture to spice things up a beat, cause I will eventually die out of boredome!

The appartment is not ours to renovate to the extend I would like it, but there are some upcoming projects that will take place in the bathroom (FINALLY) by the owner..

I am also looking forward to start designing some installments, in order to make a sort of a catwalk for Grizzly, in my room.. An on-the-wall cat tree at first and I'll take it from there..

Paint. Paintpaintpaint.  "Apartment white" walls are driving me nuts.  Thinking of buying a PaintZoom so I can, and then can repaint if I move.

Also, need new living room furniture.  Well, my big old ugly wingback would just go for repair/reupholstering.  I want to die in that chair.  Not replacing, but its springs are shot, and the upholstery is old, worn and UGLY.  It'll cost $500 to have it done, but I won't get rid of that chair.

Exchange king bed for a pretty day bed.  Who am I kidding?  Not sure Hekitty will like it, but she'll deal.  This will make room for at least 4-6 more bookcases, which I need.  Or will need.  New dest and fild cabinet.  These are ugly, and I do NOT want to die at/on/in either of them.

Buy Blue Willow stencils and get crafty. (paintzoom again)

Repair wicker dressing table and paint periwinkle blue. (and yet again)

Electric fireplace.

SIGH...

...with the cats...
a great question!

for me, i had big home renovation plans for this house but will now be moving (in 6 or 7 years). so i'll reply based on what i imagine will need renovating in pretty much any house i buy.

there will most definitely be kitchen and bathroom renovations needing doing. definitely having a catio constructed -- either converting a deck/porch, or adding on a new one. and firewood storage of some kind, again pretty much definitely going to need it.
