Hello,

As I was in the basement, I see a medium sized rodent walk across the floor (ew!!). Calling the landlord tomorrow, but I am MORE than freaked out. Miles (my cat) only stays in my bedroom.. that is where his food and water is. I am really nervous a mouse or rat got into my room and he ate it... but I am not sure where this mouse came from, or how many there are/what they ate. If one got into my room after eating poison and my cat ate it, he ate the poison too. I know most of the common poisons can take up to a few days to take affect too. What do you think? Would I have seen the evidence of the rat if Miles did eat it? I have a dark colored rug, so it could have blended though.

I am away for a large portion of the day and from what I can tell, Miles sleeps while I am gone. Has anyone had experience with this? I really am scared for him.

I would try avoid using poison in a house with pets if at all possible. On your other concern, if you cat lives in one room, that rodent would be a special kind of stupid to venture into that room. Rodents are very careful when it comes to cat and rightly so

I wouldn't use poison either, it's way too dangerous for your cat. We live in an apartment building and there have been mice here. We always use the non poisonous traps to deal with them. The mouse goes in them and then you release it outside. As for our own apartment, there were signs of mice when we moved in. After just a couple of days of our cats living here, we haven't seen any mice since!

If your cat ate a poisoned mouse, he will exhibit signs of poisoning. How has he been? Eating normally? Drooling, lethargic, vomiting? Those would be obvious signs.

Thank you both for the replies.. I went out to buy the sticky traps today. I am actually going to go get the humane ones instead... the sticky ones sound a little cruel!.. Miles thankfully only stays in my bedroom. He seems fine right now.

I am glad you are going with the live traps, those sticky ones are cruel. I use the live trap and make sure I take the little critter to a park that is separated from my house by at least 2 streets.  BTW check the trap at least twice a day the little guys will die if they spend 24 hrs or more in one. The reason I use the humane traps is that I want karma on my side and hope it helps me keep my little guy with me longer (silly i know)

I was thinking about my answer earlier and sadly some of the poisons dehydrate the animals so if your room is the only room with accessible water, there is a good chance kitty and the mouse could meet up.

I agree with live traps!

I used the traditional wooden trap before and when it went crackkk I found a cute little brown mouse that I wish I didn't kill. Next time I will use a live trap and release it outside

I haven't seen the mouse anywhere today yet but I did find his hole outside! There are actually two bowls of water on the first floor for my dog... Mile's is in the upstairs. I think my dog would get so excited if he saw it that it would scare the mouse into a heart attack!! Hopefully there is only one and it is not poisoned.
