I was wondering if when the mother cat's milk dries up and a kitten tries nursing say every once in a while, will the mother cats milk come back again? Also how do you know for sure when it's dried up? Because we can't get her fixed until it's dried up and we kept the mother who was a stray and two of her kittens who keep trying to nurse. The vet said that when shes full of milk that it complicates the spay procedure, so we need to wait but if they keep sneaking away to feed off mom then we're never going to be able to get her fixed. The kittens are already about to be 12 weeks old and they are eating machines. I just can't figure out why if they're so full off of regular food how they can keep going to mom to eat too.So if there are any ideas as to what I could do to expedite this process of getting the kittens to stop so mom will dry up I would be very thankful.

No need to dry her up. The vet is perfectly capable of spaying her right now even with full milk glands. The procedure is easier when cats are not lactating, as certain veins are more engorged and must be tied off. It is to his convenience for your cat to be dried up.

However, the kittens are young yet, and will continue nursing as long as mom will let them, probably 2-3 more months. I had my cat spayed when her kittens were 8 weeks old. She was not at all dried up, though her kittens were weaned to solids. She came home from her surgery and nursed her 4 kittens the same day, and continued to nurse for a few more months. It's suckling for comfort not nutrition once they wean.

If your vet won't spay her now you can find one who will. The Humane Society performs low-cost spays and neuters and does not charge extra for cats who are lactating or in heat.

Be sure they send you home with 3 days of pain medicine for your cat. Sometimes you have to ask. Good luck!
