I have a cat that has had  3 kittens. She's been a great mum but now the kittens are about 3 months old now. This last week I have noiced that whenever they are near her she is hissing and clawring at them. I wondered if this is normal and what it is about?

Without observing them, its difficult to say for certain.  Are the kittens weaned (fully) yet or do they still try to nurse?  At this age took the kittens are big enough that they could be biting or scratching to hard and mom is warning them to cut it out, or maybe she just wants some peace and quiet... they are big enough to play alone for a little while.  It also might be hormonal (PMS), has the momma kitty been spayed yet?

I agree with @MollyBlue. Now would be a good time to spay the mother cat and look for good forever homes for the kittens too. It can take a while for you to find such good homes and 14-16 weeks is a good age for them to leave home. It is entirely possible the mother is gradually pushing them away towards that separation.

Please make sure whoever adopts them gets them neutered in time so there won't be additional litters!
