My feral cat is not doing well and i cant figure out why. Butters is about ten years old now, i got him when he was 2. The woman i got him from actually drugged him so i would think he was friendly! this freaken cat comes home everyother day with new scabs because he thinks hes a viking warrior and attacks raccoons and dogs ( even dogs people are walking!) a few months ago he started loosing chunks of hair and had wet scabs all over. I took him to the vet ( he has to be muzzeled lol) he said it most likely was a hypersensitivity to a flea bite. I bought revolution and gave him the month and a half shot worth of stariods. Pills are out of the question because i dont see him everyday. I have tried to keep him in to see if it was something outside but he can open doors and my boyfriend is brutal for leaving them unlocked.

Now the stariods are almost done and he is getting large soft lumps on his spine and near his tail. He doesn't seem overly itchy yet.

Any ideas on whats wrong with this "cat"?

Some cats actually have seasonal allergies, and I have one like that.  Even though he had flea preventative on and flea combing removed zero fleas and zero flea ddirt, he still broke out with those raw running sores.  My vet noted that the last time I had brought him in for that condition was a year ago and he diagnosed Fall allergies (we live in Georgia).  One shot of depo-medrol lasted him through the remainder of the fall and so far he has not needed another one.  Your cat may need a second shot, but winter is coming and probably if he does have seasonal allergies, they will pass shortly.  As for his personality, I have a few like that.  Just consider them wild animals that come to you for food and support but live their own wild lives otherwise.  He may not live as long as he would if you kept him inside, but he will live the life he wants to live.  Good luck!

We just got back from the vet for more steroids. I hope it is seasonal, since it's starting to snow this week (Ontario, Canada) and snow slows everything down. He said it might be food too! So I'm going to be doing a lot of elimination stuff around the house. Thank you, it's good to hear others got past this. It's tragic to have an itchy balding unhappy cat.

I would ask for him to be sedated and have the lumps examined or drained and tested, and have any skin lesion cultured.  Some combination of that should help you figure out what's going on.

That's the next step if changing his food doesn't work. I'm afraid my neighbors might be feeding him too though. He looks a bit wild and is always outside, they might think he needs help. Do you guys know any more natural ways to fight allergies? I don't want him on meds for the rest of his life! He's a meany but I don't want to shorten his golden years by drugs.

Fellow Ontarian here, poor little guy. could it be feline scabies?  There are some good sites with pictures with cats that have this. An Ontario winter without a nice fur coat can be deadly. BTW you need to train the boyfriend better lol

Hahaha I can't put all the blame on him. Butters opened an up stairs window once and jumped two stories down. If butters wants out only a tranque dart will keep him in. When it's cold out I'm more like a door man, every twenty minutes like clock work. I had the vet look at his scabs but most of them are gone now because of the two rounds of steroids. (We are doing pills now, the first was a shot) if by the end of the pills he gets the lumps and scabs back I will take him in for a lot of testing.

P.s I may not have figures by then! He is to smart to hide the pills in his food!!!
