I was playing with the kitten and feral tonight.  The kitten was engrossed in play, but the feral kept rubbing up against me...which I took as an excellent breakthrough.  However, after petting him on his head and body numerous times, I stopped.  He kind of jumped up at bit me!  I can see his teeth marks on my skin, but I'm not bleeding.  It was not a love bite, but I did not do anything to provoke him.  I am so afraid he may be an angry cat--he must have had a rough life living outdoors.  What does this mean, and how should I have reacted.  I say "no" and pulled away.

I don't think he meant to hurt you. Cats can do a lot of damage with their teeth if they really mean it. It sounds like he got over stimulated. He probably isn't used to being petted, got too excited and didn't know how to react.

I rescued a feral kitten this summer and she still bites if she gets over excited. She had to have all her teeth removed, so she can't break the skin, but I have to watch out for that all the same.

One thing you could try is to use a soft toy to pet him with. I have one of those kickeroo toys that I use on the feral cats. They can enjoy being petted but have something soft to sink their teeth into when it gets too much for them.

If you ever get bitten again try to remember not to draw your hand away but to push it towards the cat. Their teeth will tear your skin if you pull away, but if you push towards them the teeth won't go in any deeper and the cat will let go.

You removed her teeth or she lost teeth you mean?!?!
Oh no, I'm sorry! I didn't mean I removed her teeth to stop her biting. Sorry, that post wasn't very clear was it?

She had to have all her teeth removed because she is FIV+ and had terrible gum disease. She's much better now all her dental work has been done.
