I'm very sorry this is very long but I need to tell you my whole story so hopefully someone can help me live thru this. I don't even know were to begin! I have read the threads here over & over, looked up  taken notes on all the wonderful advise. I'm in desperate need. I am so overwhelmed/depressed right now I find myself not wanting to get out of bed.

This nightmare started in October of this year I had been very lucky my hole life not ever having to know anything about RING WORM. So when this all started I believed the vet and staff 100%. If I had none then what I know now things would be different. I live in an area were people just abounded there cats also I live between 3 blocks that have cat hoarders how don't believe in spay/neutering or just lazy/don't care.

So after 14 wonderful yrs my Jasmine passed leaving 1 dog & 2 cats and 2 kittens that we took in after being dumped. I was just diagnosed with an auto immune disorder as well waiting to have back surgery in which my career of 17 years was lost. And raising a child with Autism. I was barely keeping it together. Mentally, physically and $$$$$.

In June I found a very young feral mama who had a litter under a bush in my yard. short story something attacked and killed her. I bottle feed the litter went thru some medical stuff but seemed on the right trail, I had found forever homes for 2 of them the other 2 just had stolen are hearts. I was getting them ready for there new families, shots microchipped and spayed/neutered. 2 weeks went by they were healing nicely. Then I noticed 1 of the boys had something going on were is testicles had been. I had never seen anything like it before they had been fluffy fur now they were like hard little balls of cement at first i thought maybe some how they were covered in kitty litter I tried washing them, nothing. The next day I took him back to the vet showed them they said it was nothing they had every seen had the vet look as well. Vet said the same thing not to worry probably nothing if they are still like that in a week come back.

In the mean time his new family wanted to pick him up so off he went. They would keep be posted said he was doing fine & it was looking better.  Then a week later I noticed that one of the little ginger (orange kitties) had what looked like a scratch between his ear and eye never had this color cat before l didn't really think to much a couple days later my  20 pound fur baby "Big Sexy" had a large spot on his front leg it looked a lot like the 1 kitten, bald lumpy black growth kinda thing then I noticed he also had a bump on his nose he is all black so sometimes you can't really see things on him. So the next day I took the kitten in because the scratch now looked like a spot.

Went to the vet they came back with a estimate for almost $ 400.00.  The hair test alone was going to be $140.00, and take 3 to 4 wks for the result. I have taken alot of the TNRs for spay/neutering they knew these were not going to be my fur babies that I was just fostering them. I told them I could not afford the test they were rude about it I opted to buy the RX, while I was there bought flea medication for all the animals in the house the bill was a couple hundred and I had just taken in another TNR 2 days before hand they charged me $170.00  way more then they had charged me before.

Anyways then I asked about all the other animals in the house if I could buy the Rx to treat all of them they said no I had to bring them all in they all would have to have an exam $40.00 plus the cost of the rx, $540.00. Money I don't have. They were not willing to work with me. Came home started the kitten on the Rx, started researching learning as much as I could on RING WORM. Trying to find some were I could buy the medication in the large amount with out spending every last penny I had. What little money I did have I spent on a steam mop, different cleaning products, bleach and so on some of the things that were suggested in the thread I'm having trouble finding locally. I know that its not life threatening but I wanted to try and contain it as much as possible so the others didn't get it or we didn't.

I worry about 1 of the older cats my daughter left me with has a lot of UTI problems and is not very friendly and is terrible to try and give meds to and the thought of trying to bath her scares the hell out of me. I tried it a few years back I still have scares on my arm were she dug her claws into me and we had trouble getting them out.

The kitten finished his RX, Im beyond tired my body is killing me I was scheduled to have another back surgery in december. The family that took the first kitten called me, not happy she the (wife) has ring worm on her arm. The 2nd women they both know each other is rethinking the kitten because she has RA and the Rx she has to take is strong medication and she went thru Ring worm once before and had terrible health problems because of the RX. I check them daily with the UV black light grrrrr now all 3 kittens have it as well as my Big Sexy. Im so upset with the vets office they said nothing about a lime dip or cream. I also kinda feel like they should have none when I  took in the first kitten in. I also wonder if maybe he picked it up from there when they neutered him.

Does anyone know if there is someplace I can buy the medication with out a prescription? I can't even get a loan from the bank to buy the medication. I noticed a lot the comments on here were medicating in different lengths. The vet said just to give him Terbinafine 1/4 tablet for 10 days but it came back within a week!

Hi there,

So sorry you are going through all this. The short answer is that you can't buy prescription meds without a prescription. However, you can get them less expensively. You can get terbinafine at CVS and you might do even better at Walmart or Costco. You can also get a discount if you have a AAA card. We did that. Terbinafine (generic) is not very expensive compared to the other medications. Just be very careful if you are giving it to kittens or small cats. At least one woman reported on this site that it was deadly for her cat. Make sure your vet is giving the correct dose — I called an animal hospital pharmacy and double-checked because, while I love my vet, she is not always perfect at math.

It sounds like you don't love your vet. If he or she didn't tell you about dips, he/she is probably not aware of current best practices for treating ringworm. I came to my vet with a list of links to Karen Moriello's treatment protocols but my vet knew all about it and we were fine. You can try that with your vet but, if you live in a community where you have other options, it might be better for you to make some calls to other vets and see how they respond to your situation. Someone should be willing to give you a break, I hope, since you're doing rescue work and you're paying a hard price for those good deeds.

Keep in mind that ringworm WILL eventually resolve itself although it can take a long while and can be kind of, well, disgusting in the meantime. Most of us want to attack it and cure it but if you simply can't handle it for some reason or other, no one is going to die. If my resources were limited, I'd try to do as much dipping, oral meds, and cleaning as I could manage and let nature take its course.

There are two excellent articles on this site about treating ringworm and how to manage the related cleaning. You can find the links in various posts over at the other thread, "6 Things I Learned from Our Ringworm Plague," or search for them in "Articles," which you'll find in the red navigation bar at the top of every page here.

Best of luck to you!

You got first-hand advice from @Bunnelina  who knows a LOT about ringworm. Here are links to a couple of articles written with her help. One of them has a video embedded with Dr. Karen Moriello's lecture on the topic -
