Hi

I took my 11yr old Norwegian forest cat to the vet today coz he was walking funny and tried to jump onto a shelf (that he usually clears easily) and he fell backwards. He also hadn't eaten all day (very unusual) and was licking his nose a lot. The vet did some neuro test in the surgery to check his eyes and his balance etc and he was fine. She ended up giving him a pain killer injection and told me to call tomorrow.

Since we got home he has hidden under the curtains and each time he wakes up he hisses and, it sounds like he's having a fit, I can hear him hitting the wall. Then he runs away to another curtain. I haven't seen him fit, coz he's hiding, but it sounds like he wakes up terrified.

Any help or suggestions will be gratefully accepted.

Thanks

My kitten was just "altered" and the pain killer injection they gave him made him aggressive. I was told by the tech at the vet's office that it happens sometimes with pain meds. He had 3 pain pills to take after his surgery and they made him aggressive too, when he was "done" with pain meds he was back to his old self

Thank you LoveMyZeus! I hope that's what it is. I will call the vets back tomorrow. But that makes me feel a bit better. I'll just keep an eye on him thru the night.

at 11 years old he may be getting arthritis. there are some supplements that may help that like glucosamine...did your vet think that might be a possibility?

Prior to the vet, was he peeing and pooping normally?  Was he eating normally?  The constant licking makes me think his tummy was upset and he might need an injection to calm his tummy.

Definitely call the vet and report his reaction to the pain medicine.  Do you know what it was?  It should be on your office visit notes.  I would try to offer him some wet food with some water added to help keep him hydrated.  Don't force him to come out, but put the food close to where he's hiding.  You could even use tuna to lure him out.  Keep an eye on him and watch for signs of him getting worse.  If you notice any at all, get him to an emergency vet immediately.

Thanks ellag and stephanietx [emoji]128512[/emoji] I have taken him back to the vet. She said the tramadol would have made him hallucinate. Good to know. But he's having tests for his walking and fluids. I thought it might be arthritis too. That's why she gave him the shot. I think he might be full of hair, which explains the lip licking (even tho I give him petlax every couple of days) but the walking funny is a mystery Coz the tramadol didn't help. Thank you all so much for your replies.

It turns out he has acute kidney failure. One kidney is shrivelled up and the other one has been doing all the work. Something must have overloaded the one good kidney. Now just waiting to see if he recovers.
